From The Vault: Brandy – ‘Talk About Our Love (ft. Kanye West)’

Published: Sunday 5th Jan 2014 by Joe

Our first From The Vault of 2014 comes courtesy of Brandy and Kanye West and their R&B groove ‘Talk About Our Love’.

Rolled out as the lead single from B-Rocka’s fourth effort ‘Afrodisiac’ which came out in Summer 04 after the singer took some time out to focus on motherhood, ‘Love’ was produced by West and was also written by him alongside Harold Lilly. Like most of Yeezy’s’ work at the time, the track was built around a Funk sample, in this case ‘Gilly Hines’ by Mandrill and featured Israeli violinist Miri Ben-Ari.

The song deals with a relationship marred by rumors, gossip and “he said, she said”.

Released to critical acclaim, the song was only a moderate hit for the Vocal Bible in the US, peaking at #36 on the Billboard Hot 100, #16 on the Hip-Hop/R&B charts; but it fared a lot better in the UK with its #6 peak position on the Official Singles Charts

Dave Meyers handled the visualization of the song, delivering a stunning clip which sees the protagonists drifting apart since they are never able to catch a moment alone because their house is constantly crowded. The use of intricate choreography was also a pleasant touch and one indicative of B growing the length and breadth of her skill-set.

With Bran hard at work on a new project, our thoughts are running wild just imagining what she will come up with this go around. We’re worried though, because Ms. Norwood always delivers a chapter and verse in musical brilliance.

As always, Brandy, we’re rooting for you!

THIS SONG & ALBUM WERE SO AHEAD OF ITS TIME IT DIDNT START LIKING IT THEM UNTIL YEARS LATER. I MAY SHADE BRANDY A LOT BECAUSE SHE BE FLOPPING BUT I CANNOT DENY THE BRILLIANCE THAT IS HER MUSIC. HER VOICE IS ONE OF A KIND AN HER EAR FOR MUSIC IS F****** INSANE. I HOPE SHE WILL ACTUALLY PROMOTE THIS TIME AROUND BECAUSE TWO ELEVEN WAS A GOOD CD (I DIDNT BUY IT UNTIL RECENTLY). I SUGGEST EVERYONE PURCHASE AFRODISIAC IT IS SUCH A GEM

Brandy has always been overrated and the reason she isn’t popping off is because Monica has always been better.

Monica has got timeless RnB classics, she is up there with RnB legends like Mary J Blige, Boz II Men, Toni Braxton…etc.

Sure Brandy has a good voice, Monica has a better voice.

Sure Brandy has got good songs, Monica has TIMELESS CLASSICS. And this is showing now.

The Boy is mine > Any and all Brandy albums.

  4. HATEBIRD January 5, 2014

Monica has a better voice but she has been hitting the same note since 94? Brandy has a more versatile voice and more range than Monica. And since you stan for sales, Never Say Never outsold Monica’s entire discography lmao

  5. HATEBIRD January 5, 2014

    Brandy > Any Monica album
Never Say Never > Any Monica album
Full Moon > Any Monica Album
Afrodisiac > Definitely Any Monica album
    Human > Any Monica Album
Two Eleven = Any Monica Album, but vocally > Any Monica album

Even tho I dislike Talk About Our Love, Afrodisiac is beyond a great album. It’s still ahead of it’s time and only gets overlooked because it had low sales. Songs like Who is She 2 U, I Tried, Focus, Finally, Come as You Are, Say You Will and Neccessary are still just as refreshing as they were 9-10 yrs ago. Atlantic should had Brandy do a spring promo tour, release the remix of Who is She 2 U with Usher as the lead spring in March/April, the album in June with I Tried as the 2nd single, then Say You Will as the 3rd single in September with Finally as the 4th single in December. She should’ve performed at the BET Awards, VMAs, AMAs and Grammys. Afrodisiac could’ve been a huge contemporary R&B album that crossed over. Tbh, it could’ve been Brandy’s version of Confessions in terms of overall impact.

Have no time for this stale 90’s beef! If you’re still mad at Bran for slaying that decade, go hang yourself! It’s already in the history books! This song was so underrated! Brandy was everything (looking like a fierce Pocahontas)! ‘Ye was spot on & B’rocka slayed it!

*Plays Sittin’ On Top Of the world*

Brandy and Monica need not be mentioned together in a post about Brandy

    This ain’t 3rd grade

    Both are grown ass women.

Neither are better than each other, irregardless If Brandy had more overall success or Monica sells more currently. Both of them own 1 SOLE GRAMMY, they happen to share.

    Both talented rnb divas

Brandy’s supposed slaying of the 90s is as real as Al Shiek ABitch…Monica’s music and impact>>>>>

It’s always a tired ass Monica stan tryna shade Brandy. Brandy has worked with and been praised by the greatest of the great: Whitney, Aretha, Diana, MJ, Janet, Chaka, Gladys. Even rock and pop artists have praised Brandy. Brandy has influenced an ENTIRE generation of female singers: Ciara, Rihanna, Ashanti, Amerie, Seven, Dawn Richards, Erykah Badu, Jazmine Sullivan, Keyshia Cole, Ariana Grande, Jessie J, Melanie Fiona and Elle Varner have all listed Brandy as a major influence. I highly doubt a “good” voice would do that. Monica only has like 4 timeless R&B songs: For You I Will, BYWOML, WILYSM and The Boy Is Mine. Brandy has timeless music, which is why she receives such high praise. Monica is still talking about basic hoodrat s***

  11. The Boy Toy January 5, 2014

LMAO @ this STALE elementary school beef. Brandy ruled Monica In the 90s and Monica ruled in the 2000’s singles-wise. They both have 1 platinum, 1 gold and 2 flop albums in the 2000’s and 2010’s. They’re equal. Both of them are very talented and have accomplished a lot.

Anyway, I used to love TAOL. Brandys promo has sucked since Full Moon and it’s sad. Her team always drops the ball.

  12. Vee January 5, 2014

Brandy has much more classic R&B songs than Monica. As people outside of the US or
or people who are not big on R&B to name a Brandy or Monica, believe more would be able to name a Brandy song.

  13. ChrisFresh January 5, 2014

Kanye met Kim on the set of this video she was Brandys stylist assistant.. Crazy coincidence

Well I guess Dragging for Mrs. Carter & Al Shiek ABitch will REALLY be heading out for a double date with Janet & Wissam in Dubai tonight!

  16. Brandy and Monica SLAY!!! January 5, 2014

Lovebird C’Mon now. Monica can Saaaang and had some hits but to deny Brandys impact is foolish!

-First Black Cinderella handpicked by Whitney herself (which still holds the Record for the most successful TV movie – over 65 Million viewers)
-Double Platinum handpicked by Diana Ross herself
    -First Black Barbie
    -Covergirl
    -Moesha which lasted 6 seasons
-#1 Hits and Triple platinum album at the age of 15
-Never Say Never which sold 14 million World Wide and Spawned a successful tour
-Sitting Up In My Room, Missing You w/Gladys, Chaka and Tamia, Baby, I Wanna Be Down, Almost Doesn’t Count, Have You Ever and Full Moon are all R&B classics.
-Has inspired countless singers such as your fav Rihanna, Beyonce, Kelly Rowland, Jojo, Ariana Grande, India Arie, Maxwell, Elle Varner, Fantasia, Jessie J, Elijah Blake, Keke Palmer, Jennifer Hudson, Jazmine Sullivan, Melanie Fiona, Candice Glover, Tori Kelly, Stacie Orrico, Usher and many many more!!!

  17. DIGGER BEY January 5, 2014

B Rockaaaaaaaa! I use to luv this song. I didn’t
get to much into Afrodisiac like i did Full Moon! That was my Album! Anyway, i don’t know why everytime somebody say Brandy. Monica name has to come up and vice versa. Let them be. Both were great n the 90s and still are.

  18. Sandra January 5, 2014

I love Brandy!! She is awesome. That song is good but my fave songs of her are Have You Ever, Put It down ft Chris Brown, and The boy is mine ft Monica 🙂
I like Monica too but I never knew who she was until a few months ago, Brandy is more famous and she was known here in my country (Sweden) too.

  19. 4everShelton January 5, 2014

Thats my girl. The very thing that makes her so great is also her curse. She so innovative and pushes music to new highs and then people dont understand at the time. Bc if (Talk about our love)or (afrodisiac) came out now they would be rockin the charts! they are so prevalent to the times right now verses back then ya know! #gloooowrayyy

  20. the truth honey January 5, 2014

Looooove that song…sooo s***!! (Licks lips seductively like Bey in Blow video)

  21. Navy Nick January 5, 2014

    God i love this woman

  22. ASIPOFBRANDY January 5, 2014

I stay here for B’Rocka and TAOL as well as the whole album was and still is a sonic beast. I can’t wait for the new ish

  23. Young one January 5, 2014

That’s bias.. Never say never and Afrodisiac were her best IMO. But to say over any Monica album is delusional. After the storm, miss thang are classics. Monica stayed true to r&b where Brandy went for pop n r&b. Pop artist sell more than R&B so yea stop being bias..

  24. The Boy Toy January 5, 2014

@Young One the only “pop” album Brandy ever did imo was “Human”. Everything else was R&B. I think “Still Standing” was a better album than ATS, but that’s just me……

  25. Del_Cappella January 5, 2014

Brandy is an inspiration to all TRUE vocalist. her full moon album changed the game. I love Monica too but ive never seen/heard anyone in the industry say “monica was my inspiration growing up”. She is underappreciated, underrated, ect. do you all know what you have? she’s legendary sorry to upset you.

  26. DeL_Cappella January 5, 2014

OH WOW! I almost reported this post! that is so blasphemous!!! LOL im weak…you cant be serrrrusss?

  27. Young one January 5, 2014

    Still standing is my favorite

  28. Ajm265 January 6, 2014
