Less than a fortnight after its February 12th release, Mariah Carey‘s latest single ‘You’re Mine‘ has told quite the tale on the current status of the icon’s career.
Indeed, while very little can take away from her classic-smothered discography and the vocal stylings the likes of Beyonce, Christina Aguilera and Ariana Grande have pulled from many a time, ‘Mine’s unfortunate chart run has unearthed a fact the powers that be over at Def Jam now find themselves faced with.
Nobody cares.
How many are sure that they’ve come to this unfortunate conclusion?
Bad news below…
After watching the cut backflip its way down iTunes USA, last night saw Carey’s ‘Lambs’ observe its descent into iTunes Top 900. Alas, any hopes of seeing the cut crawl its way out of the embarrassing position were thwarted hours later, when the love song was flung out of the Top 900 and booted from the Top 1000.
Yes…the Top 1000.
As it stands, the number is being outsold by Destiny’s Child debut single ‘No No No’, Christina Aguilera’s launch number ‘Genie in a Bottle’ and Lil Kim‘s seventeen year old classic ‘Crush on You.‘
So, what can be done to clean up this ‘record breaking’ mess?
Well, with Carey’s single-selling abilities now being of the ‘impotent’ persuasion, we’d say all efforts should now be focused on pushing the album…but in two halves.
For, as tempting as doing away with its May 6th due date may be, another push back would only dig a deeper hole for the project.
Indeed, as to commit to the date above and cutting ties with the pressure she’s no doubt under to move commendable numbers, why not release one half of the project digitally as a glorified EP of sorts.
Then, in buying herself more time to craft a stronger campaign and source better material, announce a winter release for its second half, built around the annual hype brought to her by ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You.’
How this helps anything?
Well, as to ensure the album isn’t written off as ‘flop’ upon its arrival, staggering its release will see Mariah pull in digital numbers that her marketing camp could simply add to its physical numbers once both are made available for purchase.
This, pulling attention away from its opening week numbers and forcing the world’s gaze on the digits its first half will pull between May 6th and the December launch of its second half.
Digits, that’d be coupled to create a sizeable sale figure for the divvied LP at the end of its ‘second’ release week!

As a massive fan of Mariah’s music in general I can only speak for myself here but it’s not so much that I no longer care for her or her music, I actually like YME (although I wasn’t wowed by it). However, knowing what she’s capable of I’m just waiting until she does away with the persona she has been cultivating over the last 5 or so years. The Mariah-ism’s are not remotely interesting to me, when they overshadow the artistry.
Anyone who has been a fan over the years can tell you it is not just because of the music and the voice but because beneath all the gloss she is actually a real and complex person. This is what made her relatable to me and countless others, especially when coupled with that God-given talent of hers for vocals and lyricism. So why she has decided that miming, Bimbo behaviour and Diva-theatricality is more entertaining than simply showcasing her raw talents is beyond me but I’m personally just waiting until she comes back down to earth.
At this point Mariah is a living legend and we love her, but like that relative we all have that we love but have slightly lost touch with she has become that relative. It doesn’t mean we can’t get back there but in truth it’s all on her. The impromptu AOLG performance next to a piano was so damn breath-taking, that die-hard haters even had to sit up and pay attention. That is the Mariah that can and will sell millions of records. Not the one in the above post picture, sat lazily on a piano, lip-syncing for her life, boobs almost completely and insecurely popping out of a dress that is one sneeze away from a ‘Page 3’ spread.

Yes it´s clear this single has not been well received. In a way it was logical, since it is so FAR from what people want now, I said it the day it debuted, #beautiful was much better and the good direction she should have kept. Janelle Monae´s singles from last year did worse than Mariah´s semi singles for this upcoming album and sold like “nothing” when it comes to album copies… and still “The Electric Lady” was the best album of 2013 in my book. Most of the best albums now don´t have singles now. Low standards imposed by labels and radio have finally made its job and people don´t want to listen to good variety of singles on radio anymore (there are exceptions). I´ll just stick to buying great albums (´ve never purchased a single anyway 🙂 ). And i´ll buy Mariah´s, you know there will be quality there.

I don’t discredit today’s generation accomplishment, it’s not their fault if they have to dealing with a generation like this (no shade intended), today, album sales are not important but so was in the 1950’s, Elvis Presley is a big example of that, he is nowhere to be found on the list of best selling albums, he was a singles artist, singles were what his time required to be a superstar and he slayed at that, same thing Rihanna, Beyoncé and most artists today are doing, the climate of music has changed drastically since the beginning of 2000 and it getting worse since 2012.

That’s a pet peeve of mine. Island Records and Def Jam Records are 2 separate labels operate under the same umbrella but the former is where Mariah resides.
