Due to a lack of data, revenue from sponsor- ship, merchandising and synchronization isn’t included. For album and track sales, Billboard assumed a royalty rate of 20 percent of retail, minus producers’ fees. Billboard treated all streaming revenue as derived from licensing deals and split that to calculate the artist’s take. The group sold millions of records with or without Michelle, Latavia and Latoya, so one wouldn’t be wrong in concluding that DC would have been a success regardless of their presence.
All one has to do is look at Beyonce’s and Kelly’s solo success/sales to see who was the real reason behind DC’s success. Hint: Beyonce’s first solo album’s sales, #1 singles, awards > all of Kelly’s solo albums combined.
Beyonce solo sales (135+M) + her DC’s sales (65+m) = 200 million records. It is what it is. You can try to discredit her all you want, but that fact remains.

Then once she started buzzing and selling healthily, that created a lasting ripple effect that made more people buy it, just to get “in” on her hype. At this point she hasn’t proven herself to be more than a fad — ala Norah Jones, Susan Boyle…who both have diamond albums, but couldn’t sustain healthy sales over an extended period of time. If 17 years into Adele’s career, she’s ranking in the top 10 money makers (which she isn’t this year), like Beyoncé, then it’ll be time to bow down…until then, be quiet Corky. She’s got a “diamond album” just like MC Hammer does, but I’m sure he’d rather have had Beyoncé’s sustained career instead.

1) Again, Beyoncé being friendly with the Obama’s has absolutely *nothing* to do with music sales — zilch. Many celebrities have been friendly with the president and first lady, and I haven’t seen nary an example of it benefitting anyone’s career from a commercial standpoint. When was the last time you bought someone’s product, simply because they’ve been cozy with the commander and chief? So null and void on that bullsh*t. In other words, shut up.
2) At the time of the release of 21, Adele was *still* a new artist; having only released one album prior to that. No one is “diminishing” the success of 21, you homegrown moron. The truth remains. Despite the acclaim Adele had had with 19, she still hadn’t permeated the psyche of the GP by the time her second album was released…so for all intents and purposes, she was still a new toy. In 2011, she had a novelty/curiosity factor about her that worked in her favor that Beyoncé didn’t.
3) As far as Beyoncé not having a Grammy for ‘Album of the Year,’ so?! Beyoncé remains in the upper percentile when it comes to overall Grammy winners, and has more statuettes than most artists ever will — including Taylor. And because of that, when all is said and done, in 20 years when people reflect back on Beyoncé’s career, that’ll be another factoid used to reaffirm her status as an icon and legend. You were saying?
