R&B songbird Kelly Rowland is spreading her wings.
For, after releasing two albums on Universal Republic, the ‘Motivation’ maestra is now a free agent.

According to CNN correspondent Jawn Murray, the diva departed the label (which is housed under the Universal Music umbrella) way back in December.
Contrary to speculation that suggested the star had been “dropped”, Rowland is said to have requested a release from her contract following the performance of last year’s ‘Talk A Good Game’ – which, though critically acclaimed, has thus far only sold 215,000 copies in total.
According to Murray, though, the 33-year-old’s frustrations with her label home actually stemmed from before the project’s release. Indeed, despite lead single ‘Kisses Down Low’ becoming a radio hit and being certified Gold by the RIAA (a feat few Urban flavoured cuts achieve these days), the project struggled to maintain the very thing that fuels sales — momentum.
The situation is alleged to have become ultra tense when Rowland signed on to be a judge for the third season of ‘The X Factor‘. According to Murray “her team asked the label to release a new single to capitalize off the eight million viewers the show averaged each week. The label chose not to capitalize off of Rowland’s involvement on the show and the singer asked to be released from her contact”.
Interestingly, Rowland only become part of the UR roster due to a structural change that saw most of the artists at Universal Motown (the label she initially signed to in 2010) absorbed into Republic.
As for the singer’s next steps? The report adds that she has been working on her fifth studio album and is already in negotiations with the multitude of labels eager to snap her up. {Source}

When an album flops and the material isnt the problem as in this case, usually the problem stems from the label ability to market and promote the the album, it really has nothing to do with the artist. Success of a good album lies in promotion. You have to pump in millions to make millions. Universal republic have very limited resources especially for an artist of Kelly’s magnitude. Kelly needs a label with a big promo budget. If you know anything about the industry you would know that PROMO IS EVERTHING !

As much as Kelly’s team may be telling the truth there’s a consistent thread of denial that accompanies Kelly Rowland and most RnB acts that can no longer sell albums. Kelly herself FAILED to keep momentum for her own project. During the Here I Am saga it’s somewhat understandable that the album’s promo was disjointed due to the fact when “When Love Takes Over” and “Commander” came out Kelly wasn’t signed so there was no label to issue an album from. The buzz of those singles came and went. Then Motivation dropped early 2011 and rather than go on a plethora of promo stops for it and follow it up with steady singles/videos she only did Kimmel and BET, dropped the video late and then dropped the 2nd video “Lay It On Me” in November. This was disastrous. Here I Am became “Here I Should’ve Been”. But Kelly hasn’t acknowledged that.
We as fans thought a glimmer of hope was coming when “Ice” was released but there were no performances for it at the time and the single died a death. The same went for “Kisses” and “Dirty Laundry”. During this time Kelly communicated nothing with her fanbase and had no high profile shows except “Black Girls Rock” which came FAR too late.
She is a millionaire so what exactly stops her from making her own videos, booking her own stages and funding her own projects?
She tried to sell that whole album (which was really good RnB) on exploiting s** (as she constantly does) and Beyonce’s sisterhood on Dirty Laundry. The worst two songs on the album. Hopefully this will make her think about her next moves. She was giving us Kylie with the Dance music of Here I Am yet she coveted America and dumped the UK and Australia which really are the ones that kept her name and sales afloat.
She may need to go the Ashanti route. If she’s expecting everyone on her label to back her she’s stuck in a world of entitlement and doesn’t seem to have yet got the clue…didn’t even Beyonce sing in one of her new songs “I don’t trust these labels”.
Hopefully she’ll also rethink what it means to be a Christian. Tired of these artists cursing and spewing all types of profanity in their work then wanting to talk about how much “God is in my life”. Seems like God wasn’t interested in the album!
