‘American Boy’ chanteuse Estelle may be a fan of fellow Brit Adele, but not so much of her supposed links to Soul music, it has emerged this week.
For, during a recent conversation with Russell Simmons‘ ‘Global Grind‘, the ‘Come Over Love’ belle was quizzed on remarks she made on the singer and ‘Warwick Avenue’ vocalist Duffy, both of whom she said had been billed Soul singers by the media…incorrectly.
Why she feels this labelling downplays efforts made by the likes of Aretha Franklin?

On Adele, Ms.Swaray shared:
“I don’t think of her and think of Aretha. So to me, that’s not Soul. She does great Folk music. To me, that doesn’t resonate that with Soul so don’t sell that to me as Soul and tell me I have to co-sign it or endorse it.”

In my opinion, Adele has a soulful voice, but doesn’t sing soul music. That being said, she’s a FAR better singer than Estelle. Estelle doesn’t really have a natural singing voice.

Adele is like “hipster/soul” for twenty-somethings who hang out in cafes and watch NBC. But she’s not R&B/Soul.
I liked that Estelle’s Kanye West song… but when I heard she’d called the music industry racist for promoting white artists above black ones I kind of got a bad opinion about her… surely talent would have something to do with it? Bringing colour in is not cool and slightly hypocritical, and shows a poor attitude.
Estelle seems so fake. Adele is mind-blowing live. I just saw some of this girl’s live performances. Talk about not having soul. Adele has as much soul as she does pounds…and she definitely beats Estelle with that one.

Secondly yes the uk scene dose not care for you trust I’m from the uk and no one hardly or ever speaks upon her music, her name never comes up in any type of discussion or debate when it comes to the uk music scene, if I’m honest I haven’t heard an Estelle record since american boy!! If I’m honest Estelle knew what she was doing Estelle was making to a much niche audience that only would be appreciated in the states, Estelle knew to market her music in America as here sound is not a uk influenced sound and nobody here would care. Here comment about adele just comes from a bitter place the fact that Adele was able to make soul music and be appreciated by the Uk and the US consistently something she couldn’t achieve
