Months after R&B singer Ciara missed out on a nomination for single ‘Body Party‘, the Grammy committee has announced news that would have changed the single’s fate had it said news been announced last year.
News, set to make numbers like ‘Party’ and Jay Z‘s ‘Empire Stage of Mind‘ eligible for nominations some critics argue they were robbed of.

The Recording Academy has announced a change to its awards criteria that will now permit samples and interpolations of previously written songs to be allowed in all Grammy Award songwriting categories, including song of the year.
The announcement comes along with an extensive list of additional alterations made at the Academy’s annual spring trustees meeting intended to continue the evolution of the Grammy Awards categories and process.
Previously, samples or interpolations were allowed in only the Best Rap Song category. The change comes in recognition of craft of writing rap songs, as it is now common for songs to include a few lines of an old song as a reference point, says a press release announcing the change, “providing creative and interesting compositions that often reach across genre lines.”
Now, for example, songs like Jay Z and Alicia Keys “Empire State of Mind” which won the Grammy for Best Rap song honors in 2011 and features a sample of “Love on a Two-Way Street” written by Sylvia Robinson and Bert Keyes and performed by The Moments, would now also be eligible for a Song of the Year award.
On the shakeup, Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy explained:
The Academy’s Board of Trustees continues to demonstrate its passionate commitment to keeping The Recording Academy a relevant and responsive organisation in our dynamic music community. This year’s changes to our awards process are thoughtful, inclusive, and reflective of the current musical landscape.
Ciara fans may remember the aforementioned ‘Party’ reportedly missed out on 56th annual Grammy love because it sampled the Ghost Town DJ hit ‘My Boo’, released by ‘So So Def’ in 1996.

I hate the Grammys, not matter how much they try to fix things, they can’t change the past, many talented musicians have no Grammys, while many Pop stars are collecting Grammys from left to right for mediocre Pop songs. The Recording Academy was once respected, now is as important as the MTV awards, do you know how many artists has suffered a la Leo Dicaprio, creating great albums, one after the other and NOTHING! but artists like Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Beyoncé get awarded for almost everything they put out, yet, none of them has caused an impact in music, all it takes today to get a Grammy is being popular, things that were condemned in the past by the Grammy itself, if i could erase one achievement by my favorites artists, the Grammys would be the first, the only thing that p*** me off is that they are considered the most important awards in music which is sad, the Oscars and the Grammys must be cousins, if you ask me, i prefer the Golden Globes and the Billboard awards, at least you know you’re not watching a big thing and you know, you won’t be dissapointed if they make a mistake, the others two should not be allowed to make mistakes.

The Grammies has always been notorious for skipping out on nominating and awarded the deserving. And giving awards to the most irrelevant or generic artist and songs. When someone explains to me how Mariah Carey only won 2 Grammies throughout the 90s both of which she got from her debut please let me know. The Grammies are also very biased. The Grammies have also become very predictable with its winners. I can almost guarantee Beyonce will win a album of the year, and some R&B categories, iggy will mostly likely win best sung rap collab or ememiem with the monster. Happy will win either song or record of the year. The Grammies is a popularity so I’m pretty sure if my fav Adele releases a single before the deadline she’ll be nominated too no matter what the record sounds like.

The Grammys are not equivalent to the oscars!!! When you when an oscar they always say academy award winner and drop the Grammy because it’s wayyyyy more prestigious!! You don’t see people wearing jeans and s*** at the oscars unlike they do at the damn Grammys. They loss their class AGES ago!!
No matter how the three or so defenders on this post try to spin it the Grammys are nowhere as prestigious as the Oscars. The Golden Globes, maybe, but even that’s far behind the Oscars. At least when someone wins or is even nominated for an Academy Award, it brings them up to a new level of prestige, even if their career takes a downturn afterwards they’ll likely still be remembered, especially if they win. You can’t say that for most Grammy winners.
The Oscars also give nominations and awards to those who deserve it or have actual critical acclaim. They mess up sometimes but never as much as the Grammys do every single year. But with all these “experts” on the voting committee, you would think they would try to award the music that actually deserves it instead of making it an upscale American Music Awards.
