Since its release on October 28th, Nicki Minaj‘s Hip Hop bop ‘Only’ has sold 399,125 units, set to cross the 400,000 mark by the end of this week.
Impressive, right? A reminder of the rapper’s commercial prowess, right? Of course.
So, can anyone explain where said commercial prowess is hiding in the UK?
You know, where the rapper’s latest album ‘The Pinkprint‘ is now on course to fall out of the Top 40 two weeks after its release.
After debuting at #22 in the market, the last week has seen the album slip to #36 on the ‘Official Albums Chart’, now just five spots away from being booted out of the Top 40.
One word to describe ‘Pinkprint‘s UK chart run thus far? Shameful, currently outperformed by John Legend‘s ‘Love in the Future‘ which debuted 56 weeks ago, but sits comfortably at #23.
However, the entertainer is faring much better on a singles front. For, 12 weeks after it touched down on the chart, her single ‘Anaconda‘ has risen 28 spots on the ‘Official Singles Chart’ in seven days, doing so after her sleeper hit ‘Va Va Voom’ crossed the 1 million units sold mark in the USA.
Though one couldn’t tell by looking at her continued success in the US, there are serious errors being made by whoever’s been charged with marketing Nicki Minaj internationally.
Seriously one has to wonder why an act who can sell out multiple dates at multiple arenas across the globe takes such a “local” approach to pushing their material, doing all of nothing to keep her hype above water in markets she owes a great deal of her success to.
For, while some acts enjoy Kim Kardashian-like public profiles but Nelly Furtado esque sales, Minaj’s album, ticket, perfume, beverage and single sales prove the general public are more than happy to put their money where their mouths are when it comes to supporting the star.
So, unless “flopping” outside of the US is part of her agenda, here’s hoping Ms. Minaj gets her global promo act together…fast!

The US is the world’s biggest and most important music market. How well your album is doing Stateside is paramount — especially if you’re signed to a US-based label and its your domestic market. WW sales are icing, the US is the actual cake. Sorry, but WW sales are what you cling to when your US numbers are subpar. If your US numbers are good, then WW sales are just a nice perk. ‘4’ was an “under-performance for Beyonce,” but not in general. MANY artists today would love to see their albums do its numbers. How many other albums can sell to current hit standards with poor promotion and not any real hits? I know albums with several top 10 singles that didn’t do 1/2 of 4’s business. The cd is catered toward a more rough hip hop sound and solemn rnb urban sound. Without a fluffy,soft,and safe sound, the UK won’t care about Nicki. She has no starships or superbase this era.
Also, the problem with her cds overseas and target should get people fired. I got two target copies and both are messed up. One i bought online and one in the store. Then, when I tried to go online and purchase, the album did not even come up. Not a good look for a new album. I heard the same happened overseas. You have to wait until january 6th for a new fixed batch. What a mess by her label.
