As to celebrate the late singer’s birthday and legacy, ‘Pink Matter‘ singer Frank Ocean has paid tribute to Aaliyah today, recording his own version of her Isley Brothers cover ‘At Your Best (You Are Love).

Recently sampled by Tamar Braxton, ‘At Your Best’ was recorded by the Isley Brothers in 1975 and released in 1976, written in honour of their mother.

In 1994, the cut found a new home in Aaliyah’s discography when she recorded it for her debut album ‘Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number’, certified Gold after it peaked at #6 on the ‘Billboard Hot 100.

He sounds like Elijah Blake on this one.

    • 2 For Tinashe January 17, 2015

Because Elijah invented high pitched singing for dudes right?

      • Are You That Somebody 98 January 17, 2015

        1. He doesn’t sound like Elijah.
        2. A Tinashe fan wouldn’t know a thing about vocals even if he did.
        3. Kudos to TGJ for teaching those young folks the song’s history.

      • Career Ender January 17, 2015

@ Are You That Somebody 98

        .
you better shade those autobots (tinashe aka acopalyse/optimus prime stans)
        .
        😆

    • cough cough January 17, 2015

@career ender you can’t shade anyone with 11 twitter followers and where is my thanks for my donations?

  2. DanYiel Teflon January 17, 2015

He actually sounds pretty good will it go to ITunes?…:)

    • RCi January 17, 2015

Aaliyah couldn’t sing or dance. Aaliyah HAD less talent then even Rihanna.

      • BeyRihLiyah January 17, 2015

if Aaliyah couldn’t sing than whitney Houston wouldn’t have handpicked for the role of sparkle the voice handpicked her:) and if she couldn’t dance then people wouldn’t have constantly praised her dancing over the years

      • RCi January 17, 2015

People praise Taylor Swift for her vocals… yet i wouldn’t say she’s even a mediocre vocalist. How entertainers are praised is all subjective. Whitney Houston was a drug addict… I’m sure she was high when she picked Aaliyah for Sparkle.

      • BeyRihLiyah January 17, 2015

bitttch just shut up and die

      • RCi January 17, 2015

The captain has turned on the seat belt sign PLEASE TAKE YOUR SEAT.

      • Al January 17, 2015

Take it your a crack baby you wouldn’t know talent if it slapped your ugly face back to last week and Aaliyah can sing. Who ur fav than prob Tinesha or Ciara MEH

      • RCi January 17, 2015

First off, I’m s*** as f*c*. I don’t stan for Ciara cuz she is even less talented than Aaliyah. Tisane or whatever her name is, is a blatant copy of Aaliyah. I only stan for entertainers that can actually sing or dance. Aaliyah is way overhyped cuz she’s dead. If you watch Aaliyah’s performances Taylor Swift or Rihanna are better performers than Aaliyah ever was and that isn’t saying much.

      • Al January 18, 2015

Are you really trying to kill me?! Rihanna have you seen that video of her singing Hero?! I say no more and as for Taylor Swift too much hype by people like you take a seat plz

  3. Lydia January 17, 2015

I love him for this, kinda reminded me of Elijah.

    • Sugah Mama January 17, 2015

      YAAAAASSSS! I was thinking that.

  4. Maxine Alsina January 17, 2015

What happened to Frank’s career? He was poppin and then it all went quite.

    • Al January 17, 2015

He got back in the “closet”

  5. Bionic Aguilera 344 January 17, 2015

Beyonce wouldn’t have a career if baby girl was still around and that’s a fact.

    • 2 For Tinashe January 17, 2015

      Hella true.

      • Baddie Bey January 17, 2015

She’s upset that Elijah’s ep is about to outsell Aquarius.

      • BeyRihLiyah January 17, 2015

but your flop unknown one hit wonder fave don’t even have a career though 🙂

    • BeyRihLiyah January 17, 2015

troll theirs NO need to troll you lonely low self esteem prostituting biitch

      • Aubrey OSlay January 17, 2015

        She’s a damn b**** for that comment.

    • BeyRihLiyah January 17, 2015

your flop ass is trolling so you can start a stan war you’re a stupid bittch

    • Danny Bey January 17, 2015

It’s 2015 and botches are STILL saying this s***??? They were two f****** DIFFERENT ARTISTS. If Rihanna can thrive with Beyonce still around, Beyonce DEFINITELY would still be be BEYONCE if Aaliyah were still here. Continue to seathe.

      • BeyRihLiyah January 17, 2015

their just trolling they just want to start a stan war ignore thm

      • Brian310 January 17, 2015

People just love to pit artist against each other even if the comparison makes absolutely no sense….2 different artist that appealed to their audiences in different ways, and created differvent music from one another, many artist can succeed at the sametime it doesn’t just have to be 1.

    • Charlieyoncé January 17, 2015

Beyoncé was slaying lives in DC when my bae Aaliyah was still alive. Sit your salty ass down xo

  6. Angela Wesley January 17, 2015

I like Aliyah version better than Frank Ocean version.

  7. Paulette January 17, 2015

Why would he choose a cover and not an original song.

  8. Keith January 17, 2015

    Oh this was the bomb.

  9. S****** Blonde January 17, 2015

Aaliyah’s rendition of this song is unmatched, just yesterday i was watching “Romeo Must Die”, my god how beautiful she was, i have a story that has to do with her but i keep that to myself. On topic, i don’t like this guy’s voice, dude you’re gay, that’s good and all but a man should sing like a man, Beyoncé has a more manly voice than he does, irritates my ears.

    • Nadia Maraj January 17, 2015

How dare you?! Prince sang in a high pitched does that make him gay? By the way, Frank usually sings in a lower voice which is why he gets compared to Elijah.

      • S****** Blonde January 17, 2015

Prince has one of the most versatile voices in music history, this guy sounds like a girl, period.

  10. Anita January 17, 2015

Ten years ago Ciara’s 1 2 Step was outselling DC’s Soldier. If Ciara used to outsell Beyonce’s singles what do you think Aaliyah would have done. #DEMOLISHEDHER.

    • Brian310 January 17, 2015

Ciara was a new artist so of course she she had her moment but that doesn’t mean Aaliyah and Beyonce wouldn’t have been able to Co exist…Aaliyah wasn’t even a single seller.

  11. TRUTH SERUM January 17, 2015

Frank did a really good job. That’s a hard song to sing, epesually for a male. It’s giving Maxwell’s cover of Kate Bush. Not as great as but in the same vain.

    • tits mcgee January 17, 2015

Yass! That’s a perfect comparison! Very similar concept and execution by both men.

  12. tits mcgee January 17, 2015

Love it! Amazing tribute to Baby Girl, Liyah!

  13. Martina January 17, 2015

Best male singers of this generation IN MY OPINION:

    Frank Ocean
    Miguel
    Elijah
    August Alsina
    Trey Songz

    • Danity Slain January 17, 2015

I agree but Elijah’s belts are stronger than Miguel’s.

    • I STAN(D) FOR TALENT January 17, 2015

Lol. The shít these late 90s/early 2000s babies say. You absolutely have no taste in music. You’re just a delusional hórny Elijah Blake stan. YOUR opinion is ridiculous btw, if you didn’t catch the shade. 😀

      • Martina January 17, 2015

@IStandForTalent I’m not a Elijah fan but I can appreciate good vocals when I hear them. His only problem is that his belts sound strained when he goes too high but slays ALL of the boys in his lower register.

    • Tru Voice January 17, 2015

August and Trey??? lol I know it’s YOUR opinion, but what a bout their voices do you enjoy? I really want to know, seriously, because I know people enjoy them and I never had anyone explain to me what they bring to the table vocally.

      • Simone January 17, 2015

August and Trey don’t deserve to be there.

  14. MariahIsMusic1 January 17, 2015

If Aaliyh was alive she wouldn’t have ended bey’s career that’s delusion idhht.

    • 2 For Tinashe January 17, 2015

She would of. Aaliyah was doing mainstream movies even before Beyonce was in Goldmember and would have done it without selling out to Pop like Beyonce had to do with the DIL singles.

      • BeyRihLiyah January 17, 2015

bittch don’t speak up on Aaliyah and bey you stan for tinashe she will never have a career like neither of my queens

    • tits mcgee January 17, 2015

I think the supposition on both sides, is ignorance.

Unless your an oracle, you can’t see, what would have been possible.

Aaliyah and Bey were cool, and both heading for stardom, so it’s, whatever…

  15. MariahIsMusic1 January 17, 2015

The song? Mmm I like it. Frank has a beautiful voice.

  16. BeyRihLiyah January 17, 2015

here go the trolls trying to start that Aaliyah vs beyonce s*** !!!!! first of all bey and Aaliyah were cool with each other til this very day bey shows Aaliyah love so stop trying to put them against each other

    • So Gone 4 Monica January 17, 2015

What’s that got to do with the price of tea in china? Beyonce is more talented but Aaliyah would have snatched and slayed her at the box office AND the charts.

      • Pearl January 17, 2015

Girl bye! Aaliyah would be cleaning beyonce’s house of she was still alive Bey was the main queen back then and still is now

      • Brian310 January 17, 2015

@Pearl actually Britney was the queen back in those days and if Aaliyah can make a name for herself during hurricane Britney and the storm of Brandy I’m sure she would have been just fine when Bey did her solo thing

      • Al January 18, 2015

The storm off brandy?! Think that ended after never say never child take a seat

    • tits mcgee January 17, 2015

      ^^^^
      THIS!!!

      • tits mcgee January 17, 2015

        @BeyRihLiyah

  17. Charlieyoncé January 17, 2015

    Frank though

  18. Stinger Bey January 17, 2015

The Tinashe stans give their fave a bad name because home girl is a sweet heart. Lemme break this down for you.

    1. Beyonce was always gonna be Beyonce.
    2. Instead of worrying about Beyonce, worrying about how Tinashe is less credible than the guy yall LOVE to drag Elijah. The same Elijah who is about to outperform your fav’s album with an EP!

  19. I STAN(D) FOR TALENT January 17, 2015

This is good. Beyonce’s favorate songwriter continues to showcase his different vocal abilities. I can’t wait for his sophomore album. I still listen to “Nostalgia, Ultra.” I couldn’t believe that it was a mixtape when somebody gave it to me.

  20. Dondra January 17, 2015

Best M. Singers of this new generation:

    Sam Smith
    Elijah
    Miguel
    Ed Sheeran

  21. Biting Truth January 17, 2015

This clown is a gay homosexual.

    • Dondra January 17, 2015

      So are you.

  22. Kylie Jenner stan January 17, 2015

I have never heard of Elijah Blake until I came to this site. I literally see his name NOWHERE else.

    • Forever Don’t Last January 17, 2015

His EP outsold Reclassified and seeing as you stan for Kylie Jenner….I’m not shocked you don’t know who he is.

  23. Mark111 January 17, 2015

Nice, but the best falsetto male singer to me is Maxwell, Robin Thicke, Young MJ, Usher (on a good day and if he don’t dance) and I’ll even throw Justin Timberlake (in the studio) in there. Props because it is not easy.
    .
I’m sick of the Aaliyah and Beyoncé comparison. Although both are/were triple threats entertainers, they’re nothing alike. Beyonce is an artist that comes around every 25 years, but Aaliyah was one of a kind. To this day we have many clones (no need to name names), but non can hit her clear rich falsetto, original style and pretty girl swag. I mean the woman STARED in her first two films, while most does small cameos or a singer playing a singer. I can’t name another singer, hell actress that did that.

    • Coolness January 18, 2015

Hey @Mark111, do you know of Maxwell’s Sumthin’ Sumthin’ Mellosmoothe Cut off The Love Jones Soundtrack? His falsetto was EVERYTHING on that track! I’m pretty much tired of Usher doing that tired side glide but I’m always here for his vocals when he just stands and sings. He has a beautiful voice and it’s pretty cool how he’s developed and harnessed his falsetto range over the years.

I didn’t grow up on Baby Girl but I really love her. Her whole swag, voice, smooth dance moves and cool as ice persona. Such a shame people try it every year on her birthday and memorial with these Beyoncé comparisons. I love both women and is it so hard to imagine that had Aaliyah lived, they would BOTH be successful in their respective careers?

    • Real Voices January 18, 2015

@Mark111 and you can’t forget the three kings of Falsetto voices James Ingram,El Debarge, and Howard Hewitt.yeah I know I’m telling my age but when you talk about Falsetto voices those three I just mention are the cream of the crop.

  24. Avi January 17, 2015

How is he paying tribute to her by covering a song that she covered? This is all just a big ass tribute to the Isley Brothers. And real talk, Frank don’t sit right with me anyway. I’ll refrain from saying why, but if rather someone else tribute her than him.

    • Mark111 January 17, 2015

You sound stupid. The tribute is in the style of her cover. Etta James At Last is a cover, yet people use her version to pay tribute. I Will Always Love You is a cover, yet what song did people use to pay tribute to Whitney? Read a book and step down.

  25. doubline47 January 17, 2015

Aaliyah gave us real music, movie, style and swagg like no other for a very short period of time. I love her

  26. TheElusiveLamb January 17, 2015

I like it. It’s very vocally challenging for a guy to sing falsetto, so he gets my vote. RIP Aaliyah.

  27. Merril Owns January 17, 2015

    I like it!
