Well, that was quick!

Just a day after teasing fans with a new taste of what’s being offered via her official debut album, songstress Sevyn Streeter finds her new tune – ‘Don’t Kill the Fun’ – making its rounds on the net.

Backed by musical mentor Chris Brown, the outing may be set for an official release on January 13th, but now you can tuck in for a full preview.

Get into it below:

Yes! While we recognize it’s a “grower,” we’re completely here for it!

A 90’s inspired affair, those of us who grew up in the era of rising Alternative R&B (i.e. 1996-2002) can appreciate the tune as well as Streeter’s overall unconventional approach to the genre more than the present generation whose definition of R&B is diluted with pop flavoring.  Bass driven, but oft decorated with odd or changing tempos, Streeter’s bops – though more commercial than the offerings of R&B sister Dawn Richard –  are similar in being what we will call “acceptably out of the box.”

This comes as a double edged sword, however, as it may keep our girl “in mention” with the hottest of the new girls, but it doesn’t always translate to sales & high streams. Here’s hoping ‘Fun’ changes that as the genre is long overdue for a new crop of “it girls” and our money is on Tinashe and Sevyn.

P.S – Is it just us, or does Sevyn Streeter’s sound seem to marry those of Kelly Rowland‘s and Aaliyah‘s? By no means in ways that would lead to accusations of ‘swagger-jacking,’ but the former ‘Richgirl’ leader’s delivery is oft-reminiscent of that of Baby Girl and, let us tell it, ‘Don’t Kill the Fun’ comes as no exception.

It’s very busy but catchy. It’s not better than anything from her EP though….

Well she’s. Influenced by Aaliyah, so that’s a given. But I don’t hear Kelly anywhere, I think you’re looking at appearance vs the sound.

My standard is always whether or not I want to hear a particular song again. And the answer is no.

I think it may be a grower for some, but I love it! It’s so fresh, especially with the state R&B is in right now. I really appreciate her taking the chance to do something different.

-ive picked up the dawn richard vibes from the jump with sevyn as well 1/15/15 #blackheart but there’s something about her voice to where its perfect and can shine on a track or it can be a lot and too much and get kinda nasally and annoying and you start to lose some logic and things just go downhill and you lose interest i feel like she’s battling between the two on this song and right when you almost lose interest chris brown comes in with if you ask me a bland attempt to bring some life to the song #jussayin…all in all scale of 1 to 10 it gets a 4 from me…good try tho-

I like the beat. But everything else seems like a Steve back from the call me crazy EP. I dunno about this yet. Sounds like she’s trying to compete with the mainstream r&b stars. Early opinion, I’m open to change.

  15. BeyRihLiyah January 9, 2015

it kind of have a house feel on certain parts of the song its has potential to impact the mainstream top 40 charts

The beat is bananas!! I don’t think the hook is good enough for the beat though. Still a decent track though she always slays so I can’t wait for this next record.
