Jay Z’s ‘Tidal’ Branded A ‘Flop’ By Industry Analysts

Not even the combined powers of superstar acts Beyonce, Rihanna, Madonna, and Alicia Keys have proven themselves enough to keep Tidal afloat, industry insiders suggest.

For, after last month’s ginormous press circus surrounding the launch of the app – billed “the first music streaming service that combines the best high fidelity sound quality, high definition music videos and expertly curated editorial” – ‘Tidal’ seems to be drowning in a sea of competition.

Get the details below:

Via EOnline:

“Tidal is not a free service. Users have a choice between paying $10 a month for digital audio-quality (a compressed format similar to what you get with Spotify) or $20 a month for CD-quality sound.

And it turns out that people are not a fan.

Two weeks after Tidal briefly cracked the U.S. iPhone top 20 download chart, the app has crashed out of the top 700, according to BGR. Do you understand what that means? There are 700 other apps that people like more than Tidal.”

Reports indicate that as of April 20th, Spotify and Pandora both occupied spots in the top 5 U.S. iPhone revenue chart – a first for two music streaming services.

All hope is far from lost for ‘Tidal,’ however.  Leave it to Hov and co. to figure out a dynamic comeback.

How many streaming services do we need?

    • the right one April 22, 2015

true. I don’t feel sorry for rich artists. if he wanted to be competitive, he should charged monthly service for a little less than what Pandora and Spotify are charging. I think that he very much so try to use his celebrity to get followers. he wasn’t thinking with a business mind but rather an inflated ego.

  2. DEL BEY April 22, 2015

It seemed a little to ambitious anyway, I hope Jay takes this as a lesson and stops trying to be an innovator…

Oh Drake with a tumor looking @ss. Jk, I’m playing.

There needs to be a way of getting RID of these streaming sites!!! Not adding more. I’ve just started the 30 day trial and it’s… ok… #DamagingTheIndustry

lol she couldn’t save the sinkinking ship. why didn’t her 30 million ig followers sign up to support her husband.

  6. Cindy April 22, 2015

Some of you are just crabs in a barrel. I’m not purchasing Tidal, but I would never tell a man to stop being ambitious. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose some. Also, People act like Spotify happened overnight. It took almost nine years for it to get some some standing ground.

    • Music Lover~ April 22, 2015

      Exactly.

    • MisdamenorFan April 22, 2015

Somewhere out there is 4 crabs trying to get at you now.

  7. LB April 22, 2015

It is not that it’s a poor product, it is the branding. If they cleaned it up better and offered that extra something, it could take off.

They need to hire an experienced brand manager.

  8. Unbiased April 22, 2015

Didn’t the launch just happen 3 months ago? Give it a year before branding it a failure. These industry execs so eager to print these stories because they are scared of the fact these artists are taking more control.

    • HistoRih April 22, 2015

It doesn’t take people a year to figure out if they like something or not.

      • truth (icki is OVA honey! THEPINKSHIT Flippidy flipidy FLOP!!! April 22, 2015

But it can take that long b4 it catches on tho…remember how they deemed Ophras neteork a bust after a few mths? It took bout 2yrs for everything to fall in plc. Give J some time b4 u deemed it failed

      • Guess April 22, 2015

I disagree that it takes years to catch on. Most businesses that take years to catch on need to familiarize consumers with them, usually their problems are ..”if only I had more funding”..” if only I had someone consumers like to endorse it” ..”if only I had access to some of the worlds greatest tech moguls”… Then it’ll catch on and people will buy. Tidal already has all those things, if people aren’t for it now, they never will be.

  9. Lolz April 22, 2015

Yeah I am not surprised. People are perfectly happy with Spotify which is cheaper. Yeah its better for big artists involved, but you’re not going to get anywhere without pleasing the people.

  10. HistoRih April 22, 2015

I knew this would happen. They’re not offering anything new so why should people support it.

    • SMH April 22, 2015

  11. B**** I Can’t Even Spell Welfare April 22, 2015

With Spotify and Pandora, I just don’t see the need for more streaming services (be on the look out for Apple’s revamped “Beats” streaming service coming soon). I think it’s a bit too soon to label TIDAL a “flop” but they definitely have a message problem. Having people with net worths ranging from $60 million to $800 million be the face of your product is NOT going to garner you any sympathy from the public in terms of artists “not getting their proper share.”

Hey, not every product, album, etc…is going to be successful. It’s okay to fail sometimes.

  12. Mark111 April 22, 2015

In the world of tech, if you’re not on time, you’re behind. Pandora, spotify and beats music are ahead and the first two has a huge folling. Google Play is doing ok at beat, Milk by Samsung is doing ok. Tidal will have to do more than a stage full of pop stars as promo. I’m not a fan of pay for stream anyway, the reason I use Milk and Pan. $10 is way too much when I can watch full films and tv shows for $8. Make it $5 and we’ll play ball.

    • LB April 22, 2015

I agree, $5 is reasonable to be honest.

    • cruz April 22, 2015

Doesn’t matter anyways because Apple is coming out with their streaming service and they already have the platform. They’ll take over. Tidal never stood a chance, they just rushed it out to try to get something off the ground before apple wins.

  13. Keri Qween April 22, 2015

    That’s no surprise

The money hungry Carters trying to dip their hands in everything

  14. nations April 22, 2015

This seems a bit distorted, how many of those 700 apps are streaming apps? It would be foolish to compare apples with oranges.
anyway, the $20 subscription fee is turning a lot of people away, Jay should have perhaps lowered the premium fee down to anywhere between $12.99 to $15 a month in order to attract more people to their service. It must be noted though that their sound quality is way better than spotify on any of the two levels. Tidal should also consider live putting concerts especially by their huge stars; they still have a chance to succeed, spotify didn’t achieve overnight success, it takes entrepreneurs to take risks, those of you that predicted failure will most likely never achieve anything more than a 9 to 5 job in life. Entering a competition market requires one to play,, smart; there was myspace before facebook, samsung and nokia before apple, adidas before nike, examples are there and countless.

  15. SMH April 22, 2015

Looks like The Carter’s self obsession came around and bit them in the ass. Good for their asses.

  16. LOL April 22, 2015

LOL WE ALREADY KNEW THIS SHYT WOULD FLOP. WHEN YOU HAVE A PIMP, THE S**** HE MARRIED, AND A MILLION YEAR OLD MUMMY INVOLVED WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU EXPECT? LOL

        Shut up

  17. Gee April 22, 2015

People like JayZ are use to everything they do turning into gold and platinum something is bound to flop at some point. Maybe he needs a more experienced team around him to make this venture a success I believe that $20 dollars a month is a bit much for a streaming service but that does not mean I would judge others who choose to subscribe to Tidal. To each their own.

  18. whut April 22, 2015

I saw this coming. When you have a bunch of multimillionaires complaining about not getting paid enough, its gonna automatically turn people off. And Tidal doesn’t offer anything that makes it better than Spotify.

  19. pat April 22, 2015

So we were supposed to subscribe to this shyt for exclusives from the Illuminati clique?? Not interested.!

  20. LOL April 22, 2015

LOL MAYBE IF JAY’S HOOKER HADN’T SHOWN UP LOOKING LIKE SHE CAME THERE STRAIGHT FROM THE STREET CORNER THINGS WOULD HAVE TURNED OUT DIFFERENT LOL

    • Tyler Makiveli April 22, 2015

Maybe if your fave wouldnt have shown up dressed like Woody off of “Toy Story” things would have turned out different

  23. FreenFair April 22, 2015

If this was a service initiated by Rihanna, y’all wouldn’t have said ‘there still is hope’. Let me leave it at that

    • Guess April 22, 2015

Huh? Jay always seeks out different business ventures. This isn’t his first rodeo, so yeah, he’ll figure it out. Rihanna has never been known for being a good business woman. How do we know this..?? Check her salary. Bey would NEVER sign a ONE million dollar contract like a certain someone has, and it was almost 10 years into her career at that.

  24. Molly April 22, 2015

Lmfao everyone knew it would flop…. These HUGE celebs really thought we’d choose this TIDAL CRAP over other streaming services that are FREE. kiii

  25. Roy April 22, 2015

Dead at the majority of people in here defending this s*** ass service. Just shows the richer getting richer, not content with what they already have. Glad it’s miserably failing. The “secret meetings” the “diva” rollout, “hidden guest stars’…like girl please, everyone saw through this s***. The f****** fact you needed some of the “biggest” stars to sell your product shows you had no ground for the project to begin with. Now these artists look like s***, stuck in a campaign that isn’t even flopping, it is sinking.

Did you mention the fact that Jay-Z and some other basics, actually made the move to call some of the few subscribers? Can anybody say DESPERATE? The CEO resigning, seeing how he will not go down with this second rate Titanic mess. I can’t.

Kudos to TGJ for finally posting this, I actually thought you wouldn’t since it’s attached to some of your fav’s reputations. Kudos!

  26. Bey Bey King April 22, 2015

Excuse me. I saw someone say that people that dont like tidal have a crab in the bucket mentality. First of all, I support anybody starting a new business especially an ethnic minority who has just double the trouble to handle. However, I won’t support someone trying to cheat people and thats what Jay did.
You’re not going to convince me that I should buy something I can get for free by telling me that me buying it help will help the rich get richer.
There’s something called value for money and Tidal isn’t it.

  27. G.U.Y April 22, 2015

    how sad #ThatGagaCurse

  28. Rosie April 22, 2015

Deserved with the s***** marketing. If they really wanted to push that they’ve should’ve gotten some “indie” artists on board. For example Grimes has been signed to Roc Nation since 2013.

  29. Carry On April 22, 2015

    So is this code Blue???

  30. B. Mike April 22, 2015

    All hope IS LOST.

Tidal doesn’t solve a PRESSING consumer need. Therefore, it was destined to flop. I’ve never ONCE heard anyone say, “Man, I wish I had this iTunes single in CD quality.” WTF!

Marketing 101: Solve a consumer challenge. Tidal CREATED consumer challenges by making the product harder to access (particularly with American Oxygen).

Hire me, Hov, so you can never embarrass yourself like this again.

  31. OMG Logic!!! April 22, 2015

About damn time. You can’t just try to unabashedly cheat people like that because your greed knows no bounds.

  32. chris v. April 22, 2015

The price of this streaming service is too steep. Never stood a chance without reasonable pricing.

  33. Sherry April 22, 2015

First of all the branding and promo SUCKED! I believe the “powerful” panel of RICH recording artists turned people off. I support my favorite artists by buying their albums. I would never pay for streaming, sorry.

  34. FutureCIARA April 22, 2015

Dr.Dre and Apple streaming will show them how it’s done.

  35. FutureCIARA April 22, 2015

Some of the fault goes toward Rihanna, since they chose her as the first artist (I Think) to exclusively premiere their new video/single in hopes of pushing their new streaming app. They thought she had enough star power to make it happen with that flop a** roll out of “American Flopxygen”.

    • FutureCIARA April 22, 2015

Just saying if we are going to blame JZ, then blame 4Head as well!

    • G.U.Y April 22, 2015

Beyoncé had “die with you” …

      • Tyler Makiveli April 22, 2015

Die with you isnt a single dumb ass. American Flopygen was supposedly to slay peoples live…but UNDERPERFORMED!

  36. No favs, just here for the music April 22, 2015

Awesome. Now hopefully TIDAL can just disappear. It’s annoying af tbh

  37. bria April 23, 2015
