Hip-Hop’s foray into R&B waters has revived its pulling power on radio.

The music industry’s cyclical nature saw R&B struggle to find its feet following its latest boom in 2004/2005 (see Usher‘s ‘Confessions‘, Destiny’s Child‘s ‘Destiny Fulfilled’ and the tail end of Ciara‘s ‘Goodies’ era.)
Fortunately, the industry’s recent decision to lean towards Urban releases has seen the genre sneak back into Top 40 playlists and- according to the biggest radio platform in the U.S. iHeartRadio– outperform every other genre on a radio and streaming front.
The platform learned this after pulling information from its 75 million users to discover what they were most interested in.
R&B was the top-ranking genre overall, thanks to Drake and his GIF-filled video for “Hotline Bling,” followed by The Weeknd and Wiz Khalifa’s Furious 7 soundtrack tearjerker “See You Again” featuring Charlie Puth. Pop, Rap, Country and Latin rounded out the top 5, respectively.
This data will be welcomed by champions of the genre who can expect to see the major label system churn out more R&B artists in 2016 to meet radio’s demands.

The singer-songwriter led across 48 states, with only Louisiana, Missouri, and Washington, D.C. crowning alternative winners. Meghan Trainor has truly become a force to be reckoned with…as an accidental pop star. Her debut single will be diamond-certified soon, her debut album will be platinum by the end of the year (regardless of the fact that it’s taking her so long), and she’ll be playing arenas next year with her next album. It’s amazing how she couldn’t find anyone to give “All About That Bass” too and so she just decided to record it herself and….BAM! She definitely had the best year in 2015. She needs to take care of her voice, though, because she’s been cancelling shows left and right for vocal hemorrhage. I don’t know how Ariana is able to do all those shows without cancelling.
