Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’  allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.

This week press “play” one more time on ‘Baby One More Time’ – the inaugural #1 hit of pop megaforce Britney Spears.  The lead single from her debut album of the same name, the song – originally written for (but later passed on by) TLC – launched the then-unknown teen into the pop stratosphere upon its late 1998 release.  Accompanied by a heavily choreographed and (later) iconized schoolgirl outfit and sassy shimmy to match, the Max Martin-mixed cut shot to #1 on the Hot 100 this week in 1999.  Bumping Brandy‘s ‘Have You Ever’ from the top spot, the tune would enjoy a short, but impressive run atop the chart and even more impressive run in the history books.  As of 2016, with over 10 million copies sold, the song remains one of the best selling ever!

Now, get into this week’s ‘Chart Rewind’ below and see what other familiar faces you see in the top 25:

  2. Arfa January 28, 2016

TLC SHOULD’VE TAKEN THE SONG SO WE WOULDN’T HAVE A BRITNEY

    • Citi January 28, 2016

Then we wouldn’t have a lot of artists out today without her.

      • dfdf January 29, 2016

Most of the artist she inspired are s***** anyway. She was just a Janet/Madonna hybrid for the millennium that only last ed 6 years.

  3. Meteorite January 28, 2016

My, My, My…how horribly far we’ve come in music. Once it used to be great and fun and very diverse, now it’s the same song just washed, rinsed and repeated.

  4. Stephon Jackson January 28, 2016

    Congrats Justin Bieber

  5. BLACKOUT TBH January 28, 2016

    Iconic AF

  6. King Mark111 /.\ January 28, 2016

This was the begining of the end of Brandy. Those White Pop Tarts snashed her t*** fanbase with ease.

And your fav as well. Being outsold by everyone.

  7. Kitty Puurrzz January 28, 2016

Monica’s Angel of Mine was the song to come & snatch Britney’s spot. Monica and Brandy used to run those charts back in the day. Oh how times have changed.

  8. OMG Logic!!! January 28, 2016

Can Adele release a new single, so we don’t have to see the Beiber at #1 anymore. It is a disturbing sight.

  9. King B January 29, 2016

Honestly, i don’t know any songs from Brandy, Monica or Aaliyah. Even when their songs were number ones, i still don’t know their songs. No shade tho.

    These flashacks really depress me…
How i long for these musical days again

Still a great list that year. Although around 2000-2001 was the time when everything started to go downhill little by little.
The 2016 list is just terrible.

Remember all this other stuff we have factored in to what is considered to be the top of the billboards like we do today, R&b probably would still be at the top if not for the gradual changes being made to the charts
