Could Jay Z be set to spin his expensive TIDAL purchase/problem into a profit?

The New York Post cites sources who claim that Jigga is in talks with tech giant and frequent collaborator Samsung to acquire the streaming platform.
Samsung, which is expected to have a big presence at this year’s Oscars, has long been rumored as an interested buyer — and has held on-and-off talks with Tidal.
[The phone company] ponied up some $28 million to sponsor Rihanna’s latest album and tour. The 28-year-old singer is a partner in Tidal and is signed to Jay Z’s Roc Nation label.
“Samsung is re-engaging; they are working on something really big, and they’re keeping it very quiet in case it leaks,” said a source close to talks.
A spokesperson for Samsung said: “It is our policy to not comment on rumors or speculation.”
Google and Spotify have also been eyeing Tidal, sources said. Both believe Tidal, although struggling, can bolster their own digital music services.
Talks the companies are having with Tidal now appear to be aimed at smaller partnerships, sources said.
Spotify has discussed creating an initiative that could produce a Tidal “powered by Spotify” partnership rather than an acquisition.

It’s almost redundant at this point to harp on about TIDAL’s many missteps. They are all well-documented.
What will be fascinating to see is how it’s cleaned up.
Note that all of the entities mentioned (Samsung, Spotify, and Google) all possess much more corporate clout and should they absorb the platform (in whatever capacity) it could be a game-changer.

It’s too late! Tidal has been a bust from the start. The biggest issue is Tidal was not properly explained to the public and the price was more expernsive compared to the services that are already out. Plus the way the media portrayed it as mega rich musicians trying to get richer didn’t help it either. Madonna, Rihanna, and Cold Play’s album all underperformed on this music service. Lastly everything “Tidal Exclusive” leaks on the net in a matter of minutes… What’s the allure of buying this service?
It’s a flop plain and simple. They could have 1000 owners and it would still be unsuccessful, Jay Z can’t win at everything a great business man knows that you have to take a couple of L’s while achieving greatness. I’m using Tidal now mainly because I was paying for Spotify, but Tidal was getting the exclusives. I thought it was catching on this year. How do you expect a service to work if you don’t market it? Rihanna and Kanye were the only ones to put full albums on it because they’re the only ones that owns their music.

I think you’re talking about Beats One and Apple bought Beats By Dre. But I do agree that they might merge or Samsung make a deal to use them OR to power their Milk music service. That would give Tidal the traffic it needs and it’ll be their free option.
Samsung already has its own music service for its line of phones. It’s the far superior (to Crapple Music) Milk Music.

Spotify is only winning because of their free option. Good for ad revenue, but the reason I switched because Tidal was getting the music first and only from these big artist. Tidal pays the artist more, so sooner or later Artist are going to pull a Taylor and Adele and take their music off of it. Question is, does Tidal have the time and the resources to wait til then? So far this year, they’re doing fine.

Tidal is actually a great investment. I’d artists decide to remove their music off of these streaming services that pay them jack s*** for their music then I wouldn’t be surprised if they move to Tidal. this is why they are interested in the venture. plus Tidal is like self promotion and if they were smart then they would make a marketing strategy like “Tidal users get access to formation, anti, Nickis, Jays, Alicias new tour tickets first and at a discounted rate” Self promotion and traffic to come to their service.

I like tidal and it has a great lay out. I do believe that they need to make their exclusive content EXCLUSIVE!! Only way outsiders can get in is to join. I doubt J will sell the entire company, if anything it would alleviate a lot of hate that people who hate the Carters have towards Tidal
