Much like his ‘FourFiveSeconds’ co-star Rihanna, the campaign surrounding Kanye West‘s latest opus, ‘The Life Of Pablo,’ has been a rollercoaster to say the least.
Despite being greeted by critical acclaim from music industry insiders to fans alike, the album’s sales have been…umm…interesting considering it’s only been available for stream via Tidal and for purchase via his own official web site.
Well, that was, until last week.
Now with spins being earned on Spotify, Apple Music, and more, West may very well be ready to see that “rollercoaster” ride him right to the top of the Billboard 200. Challenging next week’s top contenders for the spot – Zayn Malik, Jhene Aiko/Big Sean, and Rih, ‘Pablo’ is set to see new life breathed into it. The feat, if accomplished, will be accompanied by some history-making news:

Since going wide to Spotify, Apple Music and other services last week, preliminary data suggests Pablo (G.O.O.D./Def Jam) is on track for some 90m streams, which would put him at 60k+ SEA.
This would be the first time an album hit #1 SPS with virtually no sales—a benchmark for the new era.
If West does surpass the competition to land a new number 1 album on streaming alone, we’re sure tongues will be wagging in disagreement. For, with streams alone, he would snatch the title of ‘lowest sales of any #1 album in history’ from his Roc Nation sister Rihanna (read more on that here).

This is where we need to now realise that ‘streaming’ is the future and that the Billboard charts (especially the BB200) are no longer judged by sales alone but by popularity in streams/downloads and, according to recent statistics presented by the RIAA, it is clear that 82% of the U.S population are now preferring to pay to stream/download albums rather than purchase them physically.
