With his forthcoming independent LP, ‘Paradise Cove,’ fast on its way, Mario seeks a return to radio and charts via his new single ‘I Need More.’

The trap-inspired tune sees the R&B crooner ready for the dance floor and gaining access to “certain sounds and textures you wouldn’t get from a label-produced Mario album,” he recently said.

Does he hit the nail on the head or miss the mark completely?  Listen below and let us know:

The spoken sung vocal that lines the tune almost sounds like it belongs at a baseball game instead of a hard-hitting trap single.  Interesting reference from where we’re listening because ‘More’ is not only a misstep for Mario, it’s a miss all together.

Let’s hope the song is not indicative of ‘Paradise’ as a whole body of work.

It doesn’t sound bad but it isn’t good either. I am so tired of this Migo’s & Future inspired music that these R&B singers are doing.

Mario, go back to the drawing board with this one.

While it’s not a total miss… It’s not really IT, either.

I just don’t understand why ALL of these R&B singers want to sound the same. Literally same beats, same meaningless songs & they wonder why they’re not going anywhere. What happened to taking risks or creating your own lane?

Good for him making a return to music. TGJ, what about Lloyd’s new song too?

Mario may have had a short run (2002 – 2007 max) but that “Let Me Love You” joint is a classic! I NEVER tire of listening to it. As for this song, I agree with the above sentiments that this Trap&B sound is played. He used to say that his next album (we’ve been waiting since 2009) would eschew the latest trends in R&B and just focus on creating classic music. I think he may have contradicted himself. Good luck to him though.

I really don’t think it’s that bad. He’s only doing what most acts do when returning to the scene. Michael Jackson AND Prince did it with New Jack swing. They adapted to the new sound. But this song here is him doing a complete 180…I like it but I don’t like it for him. It just reminds me of the lack of R&B support.

Vocalist like Mario need to go back to their core duties and stop neglecting their true potential as singers just to fit in.

The guy can hold a note on record so he got to fix this trend.
