The music landscape is changing at the speed of light.
In recent times, a major catalyst for said shapeshifting has been the advent of streaming.
Indeed, in the last 18 months, chart and plaque certifications in major markets such as the US and UK have been revised to factor in on-demand streams.
The latest entity to embrace the format is the Grammy Awards.
In a press statement issued to That Grape Juice and other outlets, organisers for music’s most prestigious night revealed amended rules – which are notably stream-friendly.

As outlined in detail below, steam-only releases such as Kanye West’s ‘The Life Of Pablo’ and Chance The Rapper‘s ‘Coloring Book’ will now be eligible for the coveted gramophones. A practice previously not permitted in years gone:
Streaming-Only Recordings Now Eligible
Previous eligibility guidelines required recordings to be commercially available via general distribution or digital recordings/downloads, thereby precluding works released solely through streaming services. The eligibility guidelines have been revised to include recordings released via streaming platforms, and are updated as follows:
- Release Date: Recordings (albums/singles) must be available to the public nationwide as stand-alone purchases or streams between Oct. 1, 2015, and Sept. 30, 2016. Imports are not eligible.
- General Distribution: Works must be released via general distribution, defined as the nationwide release of a recording via brick and mortar, third-party online retailers, and/or applicable digital streaming services. Applicable streaming services are paid subscription, full catalogue, on-demand streaming/limited download platforms that have existed as such within the United States for at least one full year as of the submission deadline. All recordings entered must have an assigned International Standard Recording Code (ISRC).
Digital Recordings: Recordings released nationwide via download or streaming service must have quality comparable to at least 16-bit 44.1 kHz. Submissions sent to The Academy for consideration must also include both the original file and the product, proper label credits (producer, mixer, songwriter, etc.) in the metadata file, and a verifiable online release date.
Other changes to the Grammy rulebook include a decrease in the number of categories members can vote in. A move designed to do-away with the practice of genre novices contributing to the count for material they know little about.
The Best New Artist category has also been tweaked to do away with the “must have released an album” requirement. Now, contenders simply need to have released a minimum of 5 tracks (or one album) – but no more than 30 singles (or three albums).
Still, streaming remains the most profound adjustment.

The change forms part of a clear initiative by industry forces to normalise the streaming format – both commercially and critically.
Though resistance has been rife, it’s apparent that things are will only continue to veer in this direction. And we’re not mad at it. At least when it comes to awards.
Just like when an album would leak “back in the day,” once material is out there…it’s out there. As such, if released legally on streaming services such as the Spotify’s, Apple Music’s, and TIDAL‘s, then why not be eligible award consideration? They are genuine consumption platforms after all.
Our streaming gripe has always been with “free” plays counting towards certifications – simply because it clouds the true picture of who is “winning” and whose success is largely smoke and mirrors. More importantly, it doesn’t confirm whether listeners legitimately support what they hit play on or are merely checking out of interest. The latter is an issue because big budgets can effectively “buy” attention and inquisitiveness (which lead to plays), but can’t accurately relay whether the consumer even liked it. Something downloads arguably can.
Anyway, enough of our rambling…
Grammys has always been about quality not sales, so I see no problem with qualifying stream-only albums.
Lies it’s about politics and popularity.
Just because your fave has only been able to pick up one award piggybacking on Missy Elliot doesn’t mean the entire ceremony is based on politics.

I watched Lemonade on HBO, it was very well written, and the music was great for that film special. But I have not made any effort to listen to the music since the HBO special. Love me some Beyonce, but Lemonade did remind me of the album called Beyonce. On the other hand, Rihanna’s album, “Anti” is excellent, musically and well written videos.
Rihanna performance/music/videos are always unique. You never know which way her sound will go such a surprising artist.
