Sevyn Streeter Denied National Anthem Performance over ‘We Matter’ Jersey

Sevyn Streeter was set to perform the national anthem at Wednesday night’s Philadelphia 76ers’ season opener, but that showing did not happen.

Find out why below…

Donning a ‘We Matter’ jersey, the singer-songwriter posted a video on her Instagram regarding her absence in performing. Streeter says the ‘Sixers’ organization deemed her attire as controversial and prohibited her from performing.

In the ‘D4L’ singer’s place, the producers appointed a member of their dance team to sing the anthem, who was coincidentally black.

The 76ers said in a statement:

“The Philadelphia 76ers organization encourages meaningful actions to drive social change. We use our games to bring people together, to build trust and to strengthen our communities. As we move from symbolic gestures to action, we will continue to leverage our platform to positively impact our community.”

Anthem issues have taken over the headlines of the sports world in recent months; case in point San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who elected to not stand as the anthem was being played in protest of the social injustices reigning over America’s people of color (poc).

    That’s absolutely ridiculous.

  2. SMH October 27, 2016

Their “statement” is utter bullsh*t. If that was truly their position, they would have let her sing the anthem instead of rolling out some team token to do it.

I applaud Sevyn for remaining calm and collected after this insanely backwards attitude on organizers. I hope this news gathers steam and they face serious backlash

Absolute f*ckery. Wish she’d cover up with a shirt only to rip it off to show those fools ‘we matter’ at the end of a slayed performance. If only…

      Then she would’ve been black-balled.

      • Kwinzy October 27, 2016

Black-balled? F*ck what these corporate bigots think! What a defeatist attitude. We either matter or we don’t. Just another ploy to silence BW. Sevyn didn’t even perform and the sh!t still made headlines. That’s impact in itself.

That “impact” isn’t going to sell her more records, or lower ticket sales of 76er games. By the end of today, few people will still be talking about it.

Then you’re part of the problem, not her. The matter is deeper than c00ning for coin at this point, dummy. Many people are talking and will continue to talk. BLM is a strong movement with MANY supporters. Was Kaepernick banned from playing the field? Did Bey still gross one of the top tours of 2016 after Formation dropped? FOH. Sevyn may not be where she should in her career right now but no way in hell is she gonna be black-balled for something so meaningful.

That unfortunate man smh. She shoulda wore Sixers jersey that said We Matter on the back and turned around at the end of the performance. lol

  6. Biting Truth October 27, 2016

That’s what she gets. She should have known better than to try to wear something like that while performing the NA. She thought she could toe the line, be part of the “stay woke”/kneeling hipster fad for the approval of all the sillies on Twitter…and STILL have her diva Whitney moment to advance her career. Can’t have it both ways, silly girl.
