New Song: Mariah Carey – ‘I Don’t (ft. YG)’

Published: Friday 3rd Feb 2017 by Sam

Mariah Carey is back!

The elusive chanteuse has finally unzipped new single ‘I Don’t’ featuring rapper YG.

Touted as a “breakup anthem,” the track finds Mimi musing on a raptured love story; a nod no doubt to her recent break-up with billionaire fiance James Packer.

Does the track pack a potent enough punch? Listen below and let us know…

We can appreciate this.

Sonically, it’s the same brand and strand of chilled R&B that she served up on album tracks on ‘Butterfly’ and beyond.

What’s more, despite some corners of her recorded vocal sounding like struggle and stress, she (for the most part) makes solid use of her “new voice.” There isn’t any crazy layering or pasted high notes.

It all makes for a pleasant listen and serves as a smart direction to tread at this stage.

Hopefully, her next swing of the bat is a tad more eventful. Because, while solid, this sounds like a buzz track. A decent one, but a buzz track nonetheless.

didn’t know what to expect from YG, but it sounds great.
      Love this song

    • LISA LEVINE February 3, 2017

I was expecting a BIG finish, A big note, that FIRE she has in her lungs at the end. But she kept it “rihanna-ish needed me”. It’s radio friendly, current and the shade is on point. After a few listens, I like it. It’s no Make it look good or FADED but its certainly fiyah. Good Job Mimi, Now tell Stella to LAY OFF the plastic surgery, she looks like Boots & Saddles T*****

If this is indeed the first single of a new album, then, sorry but another big mistake from her and her team, if not, we can all relax and enjoy it.

    • Shaquiiii February 3, 2017

It’s not. She said in a Facebook live video she was just going to release singles for now, as it is more fun.

    • LISA LEVINE February 3, 2017

Gurl. If you older girls don’t let go of 1990’s Mariah, with a young and powerful gospel vocal. That girl is dead. Hoodriah has arrived and she is embracing her. Thanks for Nothing or Bye Bye should be your go-too’s. The Hero days are behind her.

  4. Mariah Carey February 3, 2017

Don’t forget to purchase it on iTunes dahhlings! Stream it on all mediums as well. I hoped you also liked my Facebook Live moment. It was so good to hear all the questions from the #Lambily. Love you much dahhlings ?

    • Casual February 3, 2017

I’m still not convinced this isn’t her.

  5. The One February 3, 2017

    I like it!!
    Good job MC!!

  6. chad February 3, 2017

Mess. can we be real. Any lamb that knows Mariah’s catalog pre 2008 knows what fire she can deliver. and based on the standards she set for herself, this is a miss.

    • Raden Kesuma February 3, 2017

it a cool jamm song chart or not chart doesn’t matter SHE DON’T CARE either just enjoy her new music

    • The One February 3, 2017

      It works with the times.
It’s not 2008 anymore and people aren’t checking for ballads or even vocal display.
I think this is a great direction and will get radio play for sure.

  7. Trose February 3, 2017

To this is it…current…catchy…and vocals…this is the one…they just need ra dip to catch.on and i.promise this will do.well

  8. Molly #Stargirl February 3, 2017

Decent im ready for new Katy tbh

    • The One February 3, 2017

No one address the guy bringing up Katy out of no where and we’ll stay on topic!!

  9. Everyone’s A Critic February 3, 2017

It’s not that it’s a bad song, it’s just her music is not aging with her. Like… this is a legend with timeless hits.. this is just beneath her.
The song is cool though. Feel like Sevyn Streeter would’ve killed this

    • The One February 3, 2017

      You sound uninformed.
How does a aged song sound?
Do you hear how silly your observation sounds when ask to answer it!?
Is it vision of love? Make it happen?
Were those songs to aged at the time she song them?
Y’all need to get over this old vs new Mariah.
Songs like Vision of Love, Hero, I don’t Wanna Cry, are classics but they wouldn’t sell in this new musical climate.
In the music industry you either stay current or be forgotten and there’s a plethora examples of this!

      • Everyone’s A Critic February 3, 2017

        I’ll inform you then.

Singing “I don’t” like you’re in your 20’s is fine because you’re young and there’s plenty of fish in the sea
But put in context of a 50 (rounded up) year old woman, mother, divorcee.. it’s not tasteful.
When Beyoncé sang ALL Night after an album bashing her lover, it made sense because it was a perception of forgiveness from a wife, a mother and woman in her 30’s. age appropriate.
When rihanna sang needed me, saying she’s a savage, it makes sense to the millennial generation from a woman in her 20’s.
This doesn’t sound age appropriate for her. Yes it’s her experience but like I said, it would resonate better from the likes of Sevyn.
If you don’t get what I’m saying… imagine your mother singing this?

      • Everyone’s A Critic February 3, 2017

Furthermore I’m not comparing old and new Mariah because she is only one person. And this IS NOT a bad song, but it’s not of her calibre. She is a legend trying to be a newcomer! I love her. My opinion is mine. Don’t scrutinise me and feel validated from your 10 thumbs up because I’m far from uninformed, I’ve watched the show, I’ve listened to her growing up. It’s just a criticism, it’s not age appropriate but I’ll agree that it reflects her as the personality she shows us..

      • Everyone’s A Critic February 3, 2017

A man example of an aged song..”Id rather go blind” can still listen to it like it’s brand new. No outdated ideologies or references.
From Mariah herself “Always be my baby” still gives you the feeling it did back in the 90’s
Some songs age well. This probably won’t. My opinion

  10. Gee February 3, 2017

I like that this song is has a catchy loop that stays in your head, I appreciate the Donell Jones sample as this has been a favorite song of mine. The YG part was unnecessary and added nothing to the track otherwise than that this was a very radio friendly, and a solid effort nonetheless.

  11. Lake Erie February 3, 2017

Ok ok!!! I really like it!! Definitely on repeat today! YG part wasn’t needed at all. Although I could still hear a rapper on the track, just not him particularly. I am so ready for her new era.

  12. Indie February 3, 2017

Tune of the WEEK!!! I’ve needed a slow jam like this for awhile, where the red wine at!

Hmmm. I didn’t like this at first but this mess right here sounds so good. This beat is everything and I actually loved YG on it.

  16. RoyalKev February 3, 2017

I like it! Tbh, I think it’s the best single she’s released this entire decade! … and I honestly haven’t like any! I don’t think Mariah should be singing a bunch of dry ballads, I don’t know why some of ya’ll don’t put that to rest! This is 90-ish, but very contemporary!

    THIS
    IS
    MARIAH’s
    BEST
    TRACK
    SINCE
    OBSESSED

    COULD BE #19

  28. Teflon Boy February 3, 2017

I love it! Mariah sounds great and the lyrics, harmonies and delivery work really well. This song is a grower and one a lot of people can relate to. Also, those saying this is beneath her in reference to her catalogue of hits. Mariah’s discography isn’t going anywhere, people will always pay money to hear ABMB etc. However, classic material isn’t what’s popping in the here and now. #IDon’t works well for the time we’re in.

  29. BarrzOverEverything February 3, 2017

I haven’t heard it yet, but from what I hear ppl saying, its a classic, I gotta hear for myself though

  30. JOHNVIDAL February 3, 2017

I´m the biggest Mariah fan as everybody knows (or at least, the one that defends her more often in this site) but I´m not really here for this. I know it is not for a new album so it doesn´t matter. But come on, the public doesn´t care about this sound, it is dated. She can do so much better and innovate. If she doesn´t want to do taht then fine. But if having a successful song or album are among her priorities than this is a total no. I prefered Triumphant, way way more. Yes tehre were too many rappers but she sounded better and was way more exciting and vibrant (and with a great message). Overall, her best single this decade is obviously #Beautiful. If she really tries it´s obvious that despite her age she can get a hit (as #Beautiful wanted to show us), one of the few that can get on at her age. But this type of music won´t be it.

  31. Now at your best game way tuesidnz February 8, 2017
