Are You Buying?: Katy Perry’s ‘Witness’

Published: Friday 9th Jun 2017 by Rashad

The shocking reality is Katy Perry‘s current era is her least anticipated to date.

Her new project, ‘Witness’ (available now), made its debut at 12am EST after a four month promotional onslaught not only saw her hit major award shows, talk shows, the late night TV circuit, the radio circuit, print, concert festivals, and many other places, but it’s also seen her team with Citi and other business giants to promote the album’s bearings.

Yet, even with the exhausting promo efforts and glossy music videos to assist, the set’s lead single – ‘Chained to the Rhythm’ – stalled at #4 while its follow-up, ‘Bon Appetit’ (featuring Migos), never cracked the top 50 on the Hot 100.  With the nonperformance of the aforementioned and the Nicki Minaj-assisted ‘Swish Swish,’ it appeared music lovers were simply not here for what the diva was serving this go round – a reality that’s made ‘Witness’ her first album to ever be released without a #1 single preceding it.

Even with these things in tow, the project (post-release) has shown promise by jetting to the top of iTunes just minutes after it was released.  Some 12 hours later, it’s remained in that same position.  As fans and critics sing the praises of ‘Witness,’ deeming it a “breakup album,” we come to you to ask…

Now that you’ve had time to stream #Witness:

    No.

  2. RealNegro June 9, 2017

I don’t buy pop albums, but I’ll most definitely stream it.

    • RealNegro June 9, 2017

Streaming just reminded me of why I don’t buy pop albums. Too many fillers and not enough substance.

  3. Yella June 9, 2017

    Buying? No. Streaming? Hell no!

I couldn´t care less about Katy Perry´s career and mainstream would be better off without her and a few other basic pop girls. But how is it that everyone comes under fire and eventually end with a big commercial decline due to the volatile pop fans everytime they are “engaged” in a feud or some type of statements… but Taylor Swift, one of the very basic girls herself, isn´t???? Because damn it! What Taylor has done is more than absolutely anybody else has ever done. The most other girls have done has been some shady words and things like that. Taylor is actively planning things. Xtina, Gaga, Mariah and pretty much everybody at some point has suffered this type of ridiculous backlash. Why not Taylor? (one of the girls mainstream would be better off without? I would love it). Time for a total revampt of real huge talent like it used to be.

Karma will catch Taylor. She’s going to be the next to fall.

    • I can’t June 9, 2017

Because Taylor is fake and her fans fall for her sweetheart persona. It’s not too late though. Taylor should be reemerging soon to torture us with more of her organized noise. The business would certainly be better off without her and the pop tarts like her. Their success despite their lack of talent has cheapened the industry tremendously.

The reality is 20 years ago, Taylor and Katy would’ve been relegated to ‘behind the scenes songwriter’ status and a genuine vocal talent double/triple threat would be fronting the campaign as the ‘artist’ singing their material. The basic pop acts of today seem to have songwriting skills even if their vocals leave a lot to be desired. That said, I’d much rather a Toni Braxton or a Christina Aguilera-type front the material than a basic pop tart who can neither dance, perform or sing.

The answer to that is the music industry needs a new young Whitney Houston, Anita Baker, Madonna, Michael Jackson, and Prince. Only a quadrupal threat female (attractive, slim, powerhouse voice, great songwriter) can knock these basic pop h*** off the charts and quadrupal threat male (polished to crossover to pop right away, great dance moves, great voice, great songwriter) can bring the industry back to the way it used to be.

You know, when Adele blew up with “21” I actually regained a little bit of hope that record labels would start seeking talent again and looking for people who could sing and or at least carry a note, but sadly that didn’t happen, and still hasn’t happened…
Like I really don’t know what its going to take for talent to come back full swing…

Yes I know I´m among the ones that think Adele´s success has been a little bit too big if you measure her talent. But damn it, at least she changed the indutry or saved it. I also though some things were going to change. But hey, girl did it, no wonder why, even if her albums might not be the best of a given year, win all the awards. I would probably make that decision too in an attempt at proving a point. We need more like her or bettter. Sadly tehre aren´t Whitney´s or Miuchael waiting in the younger generations it seems. We at aleast have some real talents even if not MONSTRUOUS like Michael and Whitney. Talents like Bruno or Gaga.

    Nah

  7. S****** Blonde June 9, 2017

I’ve never bought a Katy Perry album, won’t be different this time.

    • Max June 9, 2017

You had a chance to listen to the new Lindsey Buckingham and Mcvie album? Or is that not your cup of tea?

  8. Carlitos June 9, 2017

    Yes!!!!! This album is solid!

  9. Avi June 9, 2017

LOL@the question. No, I’m not buying that mess. I don’t buy music by Katy Perry. This is like asking if I’m planning to see Sesame Street on Ice the next time it comes to town. No.

  10. XoMoDe June 9, 2017

I must have missed the memo that said it was socially acceptable for anyone who isn’t a dork to buy a Katy Perry album.

  11. Fancy BISH June 9, 2017

    lol

  12. Jasmine June 9, 2017

Why buy when you can download for free?

  13. Francis June 9, 2017

It’s a nice pop record and a much needed change in her sound, but it’s weak when you compare it with Teenage Dream or One of the Boys. I don’t like her as a performer though

  14. Ropeburn June 9, 2017

I streamed on the drive to work and I have to say I’m impressed. Not being a fan of hers I went into it not expecting much but she came through. I will be buying a copy despite the negative energy this blog tries to generate around Ms. Perry with all these “Katy Perry is a flop and her career is over” stories you bitter queens have been posting! You all are worse than Mona Scott Young with all this engineered drama!

  15. Ropeburn June 9, 2017

And another thing:Why don’t y’all actually review albums for a change instead of posting story after story about chart positions and ginned up narratives about somebody’s career being in shambles?!

  16. DanYiel Iman June 9, 2017

Who again? Yea Issa NO!! ??‍♂️

  17. Liam June 9, 2017

This album is pretty solid the 3 lead singles are actually the weakest on the album ?…

  18. AmbeRussell June 9, 2017

Some growth from her and the album. Is good as far as songs have a flow and not just 15 random songs on an album. Solid effort from Katy and it is not a Disney song on there. She is growing and no vocal crazy stuff, I don’t expect that from her. But she does need some red bull when she gets on stage
