Justin Timberlake appears to be one step closer to the Super Bowl. Again.

According to Us Weekly, the performer is reportedly in “final negotiations” with the NFL to headline the 2018 Halftime Show on February 4th.
And while initial word was that he’d be topping the bill alongside JAY-Z, it appears Timberlake has been tapped to rock the stage solo in promotion of his upcoming new album.
Initial word of his involvement provoked outrage from many wondering why he’s allowed to appear while Janet Jackson – with whom he infamously performed with in 2004 – is “banned.” And, talented as JT may be, we can’t say we disagree.
Janet’s exposure was not caused by a gust of wind. It was Justin’s hand. Simple as that. There shouldn’t be one rule for one and something different for the other. That’s problematic and something folk are unlikely to let go of should his performance be confirmed.

The NFL has not to my knowledge set a permanent rule that Janet can never be invited again though in one of the years following the incident a certain panel member stated that she had been ruled out for consideration THAT year. Like any other business, the NFL is about money and PR. The media at large blamed Janet and claimed that the stunt was put together by her crew at practice and Justin was told about it at the last minute. Regardless, if the NFL believed that Janet would attract more fans/viewers then protesters they would invite her back in a heartbeat. But she has no hits and no longer has the fan base that she once had. How many headiners get reinvited? I can only think of two, Beyonce and Bruno Mars. I don’t see the big deal with Justin getting his FIRST OPPORTUNITY TO headline and hopefully get it right this time.

One more thing, it would not surprise me if Justin features Janet as a surprise guest performer. He just might use the opportunity to acknowledge the fact that if he can be forgiven, then so should she. It would be a touching moment.

Bruno Mars does not have extensive hits but he got to perform. Thus, it is about the number of hits in your catalogue.
Madonna got to perform her old hits ONCE, she has not been reinvited based on the same old hits. That would not make much sense in my opinion.
