SZA has at long last unwrapped the video for ‘The Weekend.’
The Platinum jam is lifted from the songbird’s Gold certified debut ‘CTRL’ and arrives shortly after the singer received five nominations at the 2018 Grammy Awards.
Fellow eclectic Solange was tapped to direct the visual for the track.

A shocking shambles.
‘The Weekend,’ with its raw, candid, millennial mirroring lyrics, has been a favorite of many a fan and casual listener for the longest. Hence, it definitely deserved more visually. Much more.
With a song so narrative driven, this was not the time to skew abstract or overtly arty.
This played out like little more than a ‘Cranes In The Sky’ rehash that grew more boring as it went on.
We love both SZA and Solange, but this was a colossal let-down.

Well they were nice about the song which I think is s-h-I-t.
The ‘Casual Listener’ as TGJ puts it has few reference poInts for this chick, so while you deem the video a fail – I’m not turned off by this output from SZA. No it wasn’t groundbreaking – but maybe they didn’t have enough budget enough for some hard hitting narrative driven storyline to do such a concept justice and just kept it classy instead.
I absolutely agree this video was very highly anticipated and couldausdd a very strong and epic storyline. Woulda been cool to see it all play out in how three women are linked to the same man and how they don’t necessarily hate each other because they have accepted their roles in his life. Instead she let Solance put her in parking lots and gave her some whack choreography. The sad thing is SZA is an amazing dancer but I couldn’t even get through this video. I hope she makes another video for this song.
Came on here wanting to like it because I like sza and everything solange but this did absolutely nothing for me. I like the video concept but maybe for a different type of song. This mood just doesn’t fit this song. It also looks like she was dancing to a whole other song.

Solange was so busy trying to make this “artsy”, that it just looks….cheap and tired. A visual interpretation of the lyrics would have been a lot more excited and effective.

Solange needs to get this one thing in her head. YOU ARE NOT AS GOOD AS YOU THINK YOU ARE. It has to be said. I’ve been a DC fan since 97 and I saw how hard she has worked to be nothing like Bey and come across as an alternative and niche singer. The problem with this is that she is, like Bey, the product of a very guarded and privileged home and is completely dependent on other artists to create her art for her. When you understand that you’ll understand why this video is so bad. People like the idea of Solange more than the actual Solange herself so we expect her to be some second coming of Erykah but she falls short every time she has to do something without help from someone more creative than she is. I can’t believe that one of the most important songs to drop within the last decade for r&b was ruined because SZA trusted a woman with no real identity of her own. I’m hot.

I do think solange thinks she’s way better than she actually is and I agree that her whole entire life and music career was basically try hard to be “opposite Beyonce”. But I disagree that she vastly depends on other more creatives for her art. Solange actually doesn’t have a big team like most artist. All the visuals from A Seat was basically just her and her husband. She did the art directing and choreography.
At the end of the day, everyone needs help. Anyone had a team. Even Erikah and other neo artist depends on others.

Love Galore Is Her Only Decent Video She Has. The Songs She Has On The CTRL Album Are Dope, But The Art That’s Suppose To Bring It To Life Are Horrible.
Solange to me is much like Tamar. She has a talented older sister who uses the machine and plays the game and is desperate to be seen as an artist in her own light knowing full well she wouldn’t even have a deal if not for her sister ‘s connections. Instead of accepting that they she isn’t really an avant garde artiste she borrows ideas from lesser known artists and gets praise from her big sister’s fans because their limited musical knowledge means they don’t know much beyond what they see on the charts. To them, Solange is high brow and she believes her own hype which is how and why she screwed up with this song.
I find it fits the song perfectly. People attached the “side chick” narrative to the song on their own without considering the song as a whole (much the problem with the headline reading generation today) but SZA herself clarified the track is about 3 women sharing a man. One could argue this is exactly what having to share a partner feels like – dressed up for someone who isn’t only yours, the questions, lies, choosing to stay, the games; a performance of sorts. This “skews” a bit more personal in experience. I’m rocking with everything but the collaged imagery without borders to let ’em breathe.
