From The Vault: En Vogue – ‘Whatever’

Published: Sunday 7th Jan 2018 by Joe

From The Vault is back with a track straight from the mighty 90’s.

En Vogue’s ‘Whatever’ is this week’s pick.

Issued as the second single from the Funky Divas’ third LP ‘EV3’, it stands as the ladies first offering since Dawn Robinson’s departure.

Helmed by Babyface, it marked a change in the group’s sonic trajectory after working extensively with production duo Denzil Foster & Thomas McElroy on previous projects.

Though not as successful as its predecessor, the Robinson-led ‘Don’t Let Go’, the jam still managed to hit the Top 20 in both the US and the UK, at #16 and #14 respectively.

Frequent collaborator Matthew Rolston was the director for the accompanying video.

Set in a spooky beauty salon, the clip showcased the darker side of the group its members surrounded by mad scientists and donning BDSM-like outfits. Ironically, in all their monstrous-glory, En Vogue never lose their effortless elegance. The definition of a class act.

Years after their latest fall-out, it seems the original line-up still haven’t patched things up…

With groups like Xscape and New Edition enjoying career revivals at present, we’re sure we’re not the only ones hoping that the founding foursome mend fences.

We don’t care if it means spilling their tea on a reality TV or launching a Kickstarter campaign, as long as musical activity follows.

En Vogue, ready when you are!

THERE WILL NEVER BE AN EV REUNION AFTER CINDY AND TERRY TOOK OWNERSHIP OF THE NAME AND ALL THE OTHER THREE GIRLS HAVE AGREED THAT DAWN IS CRAZY AND NO ONE SPEAKS TO HER NOW SO THE OTHER EN VOGUE THAT DAWN AND MAXINE HAD IS NOW JUST MAXINE CALLED EN VOGUE TO THE MAX 😂😂😂

Maxine was a signature sound in En Vogue & she really carried that lower tone for sure & it’s missing in all of En Vogue latest songs & that’s sad!!

I got to see the original group in one of their last concerts before this last split, and they were perfect on stage together. There was harmony on that stage and they all supported each other. It’s sad for them to be the cause of their own downfall. No other group has the En Vogue sound, style and flavor.

The old En Vogue is now just a memory of you’re lucky or an urban myth. Rhonda Bennett has now been part of EV£ as long as the original members have been regardless of current success. Its like a D.C situation where you long for the original members but its unlikely that its going to happen.

Interesting you said that cause you know that Beyonce is doing Coachella & the original members & I would assume Michelle will be on stage Destiny’s Child I have seen the original along with Rhona *& I love them all
