Fans of ‘Cry Me a River’ singer Justin Timberlake may start doing just that once they see the ratings for his Super Bowl LII Halftime Show, as revealed moments ago.
Just a week ago industry insiders predicted this year’s big game would draw in a noted decline in viewership and now, to the surprise of many, they were right.

NBC’s Super Bowl LII was gang-tackled by 103.4 million total viewers, according to Nielsen.
That’s down 7 percent from 2017’s big game, though the number is good enough to be the No. 10 most-watched TV show in U.S. history. Nielsen viewership peaked…from 10-10:15 p.m. ET during the fourth quarter.
With streaming and additional platforms counted, the [game] hauled in 106 million overall audience members.

With the numbers above, Timberlake and the Eagles/Patriots bring in the lowest viewership since 2010.
There are several things to note here. First, the Super Bowl is a show so ingrained in American culture that no matter who is playing or performing at the Halftime Show, the figures – regardless of how low in a historical context – will never be a “total loss.” Furthermore, Timberlake did manage to score more viewers than the game itself, a feat only few artists can boast. 106.6 million viewers tuned in to see his hit-filled, 13 minute set (3 million more than the game itself). Ultimately, no matter how spun, it is essentially a win.
But, in not completely ignoring history, we have to consider a) the negative press that preceded the game (see: NFL boycott among people of color, #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay, Patriots detractors after last year’s win) and b) the fact that NFL ratings overall have been down as of late.

I could only watch a few moments of his performance. I knew it was a failure from the beginning (he looked like a stiff lumberjack, IMO). I was floored that even after the earlier backlash and his conversation with Sheila E. that he proceeded with this spectacle. Not only was it a POS performance, he’s a POS person (And we know that from his treatment of Janet as well–Talk about poetic justice for her, lol. #JusticeforJanet). The loss of Prince is still very raw and he was performing in his hometown. It smacked of blatant disrespect and exploitation, IMO. People have also been posting the video in which JT mocked Prince’s height at the Golden Globes and clips of his verse dissing Prince on Timbaland’s “Give It to Me” song. I don’t get the impression that they were exactly friends and JT’s adulation of his Purple Highness seems disingenous, to put it lightly.
