The socially conscious cut becomes the first chart topper for Donald Glover‘s musical alter ego, besting his previous peak of #12 with last year’s ‘Red Bone.’
To achieve the feat, he knocked off Drake, whose ‘Nice For What’ had reigned for four weeks.
Diving into the numbers, ‘America’ accelerated to the apex of the pack thanks largely to its highly viral music video.
For, it amassed a whopping 65.3 million U.S. streams in its first tracking week – with 68% stemming from its accompanying visual.
The jam also racked up 78,000 downloads.
Notably, it wasn’t sent to radio, hence only conjured up an all-format radio audience of 9.4 million. A reality which makes its chart success even more impressive.

I appreciate the visual art and Gambino’s talent! however, I do not feel that it is fair in our contemporary music climate or entertainment industry overall that individuals can achieve a #1 solely by free streams, free video views and other non traditional activity. It truly is unfair.
Brent I am not sure how to fix that issue unless the charts are either cancelled or just depicts pure sales. I’m thinking streaming should have a separate chart and this way pure sales can be the only factor on the main charts.
