Mariah Carey is earning rave reviews for new album ‘Caution,’ but now attention is turning to what the LP shaping up to shift commercially.
Preceded by buzz cut ‘GTFO,’ the set was officially lead by single ‘With You’ and a succession of promo tracks a la ‘The Distance’ and ‘A No No’ ahead of its arrival on Friday.

This is pretty much in the ballpark of what we were expecting and, in some regards, is actually commendable. Especially when considering the current sales climate and Mariah being in the 28th year of her career.
What’s more, though her commercial heyday may be in rearview, the optics of this era have by far been better than previous releases this decade.
She’s finding new ways to win (see: touring), is delivering live, and is releasing great material that is shaping up to do numbers comparable to the hot shot artists of today.
In many ways, ‘Caution’ is a triumph and contributes majorly to repairing some of the damaged corners of Carey’s legacy.
Hopefully, it’s gifted a lengthy push at the right formats moving forward. Especially songs like the ‘The Distance.’

it was what i expected since memoirs her sales have decrease year after year. I know all her fans will deny it but this is only her fault. This is 2018 her Diva behaviour is just too much and even Aretha was more low profile than her.
She had a great voice undoubtedly but it has chance and gone weaker since the 90’s she needs to accept this and go forward maybe with more (no pun intended) caution and admit this to herself.
I remember when Whitney returned for her last album and tour and on Oprah (i think) she admitted her voice chanced and her act wasn’t the same her fans were used to in the past.

You have to realize that the people who support the artists you mentioned are not in Mariah’s demographic. Their fans are younger and buy/stream music a lot more because they have more time on their hands and fewer responsibilities. Mariah’s demo is 22-50+. Grown adults with busier lives and less time to consume new music. Many of her fans over 35 don’t even listen to the radio anymore so Cardi, Eminem and the young stars of today are not Mariah’s competition and are in their prime but will eventually sell just like Mariah is now if they’re lucky.
And what about the good sales and the sold out shows and tours Barbra Streisand and Madonna have?

@Quicksand Madonna’s record sales have been in the toilet since 2005. She tours very frequently and benefits from an older and wealthier demo to support her tours. Barbara Streisand’s primary demo is wealthy and retired seniors who still attend theater shows and opera houses. That demo still buys CD’s but Barbara is no longer a big seller either (I don’t consider 750,000 copies a big seller). Mariah doesn’t tour often and does not perform many shows when she does tour. Her audience is also more urban and middle class leaning. Their buying trends are completely different from the fans of Madonna and Streisand. No comparison.

Confessions sold 10 million plus worldwide, Hard Candy sold 4 million plus worldwide, MDNA sold 2 million plus world wide and Rebel Heart 1 million plus (would have been much higher had the album not leaked in full 4 months before its release) those are all very respectable numbers for someone closing in on her 40th year in the business. b****** like Gaga and Rihanna were struggling to sell those numbers 5 years into their careers.
I remember when Erotica was put out and it sold 6 million worldwide that that was considered a FLOP and the end of her career.

Giving Me Life, A No No, Caution and 8th Grade are all single material and could do well. Why on Earth is she so invested in With You, GTFO and The Distance? Quality songs yes but not single material. Her single choices hurt this album.

I’m not Rock but I can answer to that..first of all nice try xD if you know the facts since 08 Céline just released one album in English the other 2 were in her native French.
The album in English received good numbers all around the world even in the us and remember she’s Canadian not American.
She’s been one of the Queen Of Vegas Making big bucks with two huge residencies there where if you’re remembered Mariah didn’t even sold out her 18 shows.
Ohh and btw since 08 she has done 3 sold out tours and 3 almost sold out (in the one who sold less 91% of the tickets were sold).
This is was she’s been doing and she’s too well.
And if you wanna talk about vocal ability just check who well maintain her voice is compared to Mariah’s…all her drinking years heavily affected her voice!

Bitchh Celine´s sales have been one of the more sustainable EVER. So just don´t go there. The last Celine Dion´s French albums have sold in just Canada and France what many international English albums from nowadays young stars sell worldwide. That said they are doing great and have not stopped working at any point really. No need to shade any of them.

I love Mariah, but Celine’s last English album, which was released at around the same time as elusive chanteuse sold by far more than chanteuse. And not just worldwide, but in the US as well.
Celine is still a very popular act worldwide. But actually, you can’t compare them. Celine is a beast on stage (yeah, she partly lip syncs, who cares?), while Mariah needs a pole to stand there and sing for three minutes (amas)
Wow. I’m pleasantly surprised at the pure sales. Pity about the streams. If Mariah actually started making interesting videos like Drake(who is the king of streams) that actually make people curious to see and stream the videos instead of just putting out videos where she acts like a s** kitten that we have seen a million times before, she would get decent streams. My favourite videos of hers are Through The Rain, We Belong Together and Honey. All videos where there’s a story and she’s not the only person in the video. Imagine the streams a well thought out video for The Distance would have gotten. Even the video for GTFO.Once you saw it once, there was really no reason to bother with it anymore. Same goes for With You. A lost opportunity for streams I feel. She’s still old school when it comes to video strategy.

Also, no, promotion has not been that big. Are you crazy? A couple of shows in the release week is much less than what she used to do years ago. A big promo campaign is every Bruno Mars´s release for exaple. That´s the biggest I remember from the last 3 years. Performed literally everywhere for months on tv and all cuntries.

I was a big fan of Mariah’s until the Butterfly album came out. Her attitude (and size of her tits) changed dramatically that year. She’s never been the same since. Artistically, it was her choice to move away from pop and go heavier into the hip hop sound. What she never seemed to understand though, was that she’d lost probably over a third of her audience when she decided to do this. I think had she not developed the off putting “DIVA” persona she’d still be doing well. This new album Caution (though still not the level of her first 4 or five albums) is much better than her last half dozen outings. It’s a good album actually rather than a half ass album with a couple really good songs on it, which is what she’s been trending with. That said, the audience for this type of sound isn’t as large as her audience was when she did pop music. I was feeling really nostalgic when I heard the last song Portrait. That’s where she needs to get back to. She should further explore the gospel sound because I don’t even like gospel music but when she does it, like on her 2nd album, it’s amazing! Mariah’s talent isn’t in question, her presentation I think is. It’s not appealing at all. I don’t root for her because she’s so arrogant and entitled. I still listen to her old stuff though. Madonna endures because she was a bad ass from the beginning. Her tough attitude and unapologetic nature was part of the Madonna show from the start. Mariah was a nice girl in the beginning who turned into a mean girl. People don’t like that. Celine has always been a class act and a decent human being. Artistically Mariah has the edge, but Celine is more consistent. Worldwide, Mariah has never done as well as Celine, Janet, Madonna, Whitney etc..
Despite her last last three albums underperforming (by her standards) Mariah is still a megastar. Drake’s Scorpion was the best selling album of 2018 and it only earned 3.905 million album equivalent units and only 330,000 of the 3.905 million album equivalent units were pure salesl and he’s arguably the biggest artist male artist in the US and Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s Everything is Love has sold 500,000 copies in the US and 2 million unit equivalents worldwide. So, Caution selling 92,000 copies in the US and 240,000 copies worldwide is impressive considering everything that’s happened during the four years since she released MIAM (Her lackluster Rockefeller performance, Mariah’s World, and the NYE snafu).
