Watch: Sevyn Streeter & Justine Skye Cover Brandy & Monica’s ‘The Boy is Mine’

Published: Monday 21st Jan 2019 by Rashad

The 2019 Trumpet Awards paid tribute to Urban producer extraordinaire Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins over the weekend for his immeasurable contributions to music that span well over two decades.

Producing hits for the likes of Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Toni Braxton, Beyonce, and more over his career, Jerkins crowning achievement may still be the 1998 smash, ‘The Boy Is Mine,’ recorded by Brandy and Monica (which spent a whopping 13 weeks at #1).

A performance of the cut came as the highlight of the homage, which will air on Bounce TV February 11th (Brandy’s birthday), and was given a 2019 revamp courtesy of R&B starlets Justine Skye and Sevyn Streeter.

Did they do it justice? Look inside and tell us:

Sounded nice and controlled til they got into the chorus. Still fun hearing another singer’s take on it though.

    Sounds really good.
I hate the fact that black women in the urban genre don’t collaborate with each other like the men do.
Beyonce should’ve already collabed with Rihanna but of course they both insecure.

I blame keri hilson for starting female urban beef. She attacked beyonce about babies when bey had a miscarriage. Thats off limits. She came for Ciara when she bit her style and look. Beyonce responded via her music with Bow Down and everyone became divided from there. Its keris fault

This was long before Keri hilson. And this issue is not specific to black women or “urban” as you put it, in the industry. When Monica spoke about what was going on between her brandy in the 90s, she said that it was mostly the people around them that was pitting them against eachother. In regards to keri’s Situation, she mentioned that Polow encouraged her to do that remix, it’s always someone around them. But let’s not act like pink and Christina never had there issues, Madonna and Cher etc… it’s not just black women, it’s the industry and it goes way back.

Agreed I was talking bout this with someone. In the 90s Whitney had done big songs with Mariah, Kelly Price, Monica, brandy (Cinderella), faith evans, Cece winans (urban gospel but still) and Deborah C**. The females these days don’t collab and help put each other on its sad, they’d rather help generic male rapper 200 and 209 get on.

Rodney never penned any songs for Mariah he did production on three tracks So Lonely (partII) You’re mine(eternal) and The Art of letting go But out of his work TBIM will always be the song that brought him to the big leagues.
