Chart Check [Hot 100]: Ariana Grande’s Broken the Record For Most Simultaneous Top 40 Hits Among Female Artists

Published: Thursday 21st Feb 2019 by Rashad

Ariana Grande is the girl to beat!

In just one week the Grammy winner has rewritten the Billboard history charts on a number of fronts.  First, as we reported here, her latest album – ‘thank u, next’ – dominated the Billboard 200 thanks to record-breaking streams (the most of any Pop artist ever).

Next, she became the first solo artist in history to simultaneously occupy the #1, #2, and #3 spots on the Hot 100 with songs ‘7 Rings,’ ‘Break Up with Your Girlfriend,’ and ‘thank u, next’ respectively.   Lastly, the songstress can now lay claim to the title of ‘most concurrent top 40 hits’ among females.  Besting the title’s previous owner, Cardi B (as she nabbed 9 simultaneous top 40 entries from her debut album ‘Invasion of Privacy’), Grande’s accomplishment comes as she placed 11 tunes in the same region of the Hot 100.

Curious to see where? Look inside:

Drake holds the record for the most simultaneous top 40 Hot 100 hits among all artists, claiming 21 on July 14, 2018, the same week that his album Scorpiondebuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.  Here is a list of Ariana’s placements:

No. 1, “7 Rings”
No. 2, “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored”
No. 3, “Thank U, Next”
No. 14, “Needy”
No. 17, “NASA”
No. 21, “Imagine”
No. 22, “Bloodline”
No. 25, “Ghostin”
No. 26, “Fake Smile”

This means nothing in the streaming age. Compared to what Madonna, Whitney, Janet and Mariah would have done back in the day if there was the ability to stream or even Britney, Christina mania in the early 00s or Gaga in 09/10. The formula changed so it’s not an apples to apples comparison

    • Whoops ??‍♀️??? February 21, 2019

Exactly. Because of streaming, Literally EVERY major pop star who releases is gonna break this record. Cardi being the last holder of it tells you how easy it is these days. This is dumb. When Beyoncé releases she’s gonna break it, Taylor’s gonna break it, Rihanna’s gonna break it, and then when it’s time for Cardi and Ariana to release again, they’ll probably break it again. And it’ll just keep going on like that. Breaking records like this means NOTHING anymore, in this era of music.

        All Facts.

    • SMH February 22, 2019

So true. Even without streaming what all those women did in their heydays will never be matched again. I mean does Ariana even have an album that actually sold 500K physical copies? And i’m not being shady, that’s an honest question.

  2. Meme February 21, 2019

This really means nothing…not to take away from her success or anything. And on top of that there is no other pop star released right now so she’s basically playing in a playground on her own.

  3. DanYiel Iman February 21, 2019

I’m sorry she’s not it for me at all!!

  4. Pat February 21, 2019

The press is really tryna make her the new generations biggest star

  5. Clarkson February 21, 2019

All her iconic signature songs didn’t reach no1.
    Problem
    No tears left to cry
    Love me harder
    The way
    Dangerous woman

Instead it’s forgettable songs like thank u next and 7 rings that hit no1. Smh

    • DIABETES UNBOTHERED ? February 21, 2019

In fairness ALL arianas music is FORGETTABLE. Y’all compare past to present as if it’s not all trash music. Dangerous woman and breathinfor instance is just as bad as all these new songs just are for the first time commercially appealing and not as generic or try hard as older cuts.

Unfortunetly Raindrops and thank you next is the best Ariana can do, light weight stuff suitable for lightweight voice..

      • Meme February 21, 2019

I was with you until you called Breathin trash. The song is one of the most tantalizing songs I’ve heard in years

  6. Culture Vulture Grande February 21, 2019

Taylor, Rihanna, Beyoncé and Adele will scalp that head on their next albums.

    • Matt February 21, 2019

There’s no reason to think Adele will ever be back. Beyonce is no longer producing the way she once did. Taylor Swift has had every opportunity, Ariana is clearly the bigger artist when it comes to streaming. And Rihanna has had every opportunity, too. Her return remains to be seen. We’ll see in time.

      • Whoops ??‍♀️??? February 21, 2019

Lmaooo, I hope the only thing you’re trying to prove with this comment is that Ariana is a better streaming artist. Because sis… Every single one of those artists would mop the floor with Ariana’s tired ponytail if she released anywhere NEAR them.

  7. KB February 21, 2019

Well deserved feat for an Artist who writes her own s***. Puts on a great show. And always releases an album of great content. Yall heaux hating like a mf

  8. Beam Me Up Scotty February 21, 2019

I’m glad a real singer is doing well. Sadly none of her new songs showcase her vocal ability, but no one cares about vocal ability nowadays anyway.

  9. Matt February 21, 2019

All these people discrediting Ariana make me laugh. Spotify and YouTube have both been around. The streaming era didn’t start yesterday. A bunch of the ones listed have had their chance, and still didn’t get it done. Ariana did. Congrats, Ariana. You are the Queen!

    • SMH February 22, 2019

Spotify and YouTube streams were only included in Billboard stats a couple of years ago, its still not a spectacular feat. Failed example, try again.

  10. Theman February 21, 2019

This isn’t impressive. Her singles weren’t performing anywhere near this level when streaming wasn’t so overly prevalent. With streaming it’s very easy to do this. The press is over hyping this girl way too much.

    • KB February 22, 2019

She has the top 3 songs and the top album in the country…this feat is VERY impressive. The public loves her and her movement…and you hater, will deal. Okurrrrrr ?

    • JOHNVIDAL February 23, 2019

TheMan is right. Everytime I check itunes sales list SHALLOW is back at #1 again after aaaaalll these many months, over all these non stop Ariana releases, even over Pink´s new song too as we speak. WHY THE HELL HASN´T SHALLOW BEEN #1 IN BILLBOARD YET??? They truly pucked up the essence of REAL SUCCESS, which was the point of these charts supposedly. SHALLOW has been THE SONG of the last 6 months. Monumental moment for Lady Gaga. And it has not been #1. Ridiculous.
