Sam Smith Comes Out as Non-Binary & Genderqueer: ‘I Am Not Male Nor Female’ [Watch]

Published: Saturday 16th Mar 2019 by Rashad

Sam Smith may have recently two-stepped his way to his latest top 20 single, ‘Dancing With a Stranger,’ thanks to help from burgeoning Urban Pop star Normani, but now the Brit-born singer/songwriter says he’s done dancing around the topic of his gender identity.

Taking to the new Instagram interview series, ‘I Weigh’ (led by ‘The Good Place’ actress Jameela Jamil), the Grammy winner revealed that he does not identify with any one gender – a trait common among people who consider themselves “genderqueer and non-binary.”

“When I saw the nonbinary, genderqueer, and I read into it and I heard these people speaking, I was like, ‘F—, that is me,’” he said. “I’ve always had a bit of a wall between my mind and my body.” – Sam Smith

And, despite wishing to continue being referred to by the pronouns “he” and “him,” the 26-year-old has considered a sex change:

“I do think like a woman sometimes in my head. I even sit there and question, ‘Do I want a sex change?’ And it’s something I still think about.”

Nearly five years after coming out of the closet, Smith is heating up new discussion around his sexuality and identity with his latest revelation.  Hear it from his lips inside:

Fans of the hitmaker know this isn’t the first time he’s alluded to identifying as nonbinary.   Back in 2017 he took to The Sunday Times to say:

“I feel just as much woman as I am man.”

Maybe it isn’t for me to understand but I just don’t. When people say they “feel” like a woman or man or neither, what does that mean? What does it mean to be a woman? What does it mean to be a man? If in society, you are perceived as a man, (by looks, s** organs etc), your experience in society will be that of a man. How can you then say you think like a woman, if you’ve never been one to experience what it’s like?
I mean do and say you are what you are/not. It doesn’t make a difference to me. Be happy init.
    I just don’t understand.

Chile, this white man does not think like a woman at any time. ? Whenever men say that, they’re referring to all the superficial principles that have to do with womanhood; they’re basically just female stereotypes.

Right?! It’s gotta be based on superficial things! I’m tired.

I can’t with this confusion mess. Its either man or woman and lets keep it at that……..this whole thing is getting out of hand. Yes Im gay, and understand struggles we face in life but we all know its male or female. The rest is just finding something else to talk about im over it!

I understand “not wanting labels”, but as a gay man, all of these “new labels” are really confusing.

Sam can you change a pad?

And this is what I love about identify politics. This kind of nonsensical fvckery spoken by queerdos who are desperate for attention has put identity politics on a slow death. Hooray!!! Thank you, Sam(antha) Smith!!!

Instead of he or she or he-she, does that mean Sam’s preferred pronoun is “it?”

    Mental illness….

As a gay man, I am tired with all this gender labels and changes and self declarations. It’s starting to become a joke and even more reason the “gay” community is not taken seriously. It’s usually the hippies in the gay community that make things different. He simply could have say he is super gay and likes to cross dress… done deal.

Just go back to making good music like you used to do.

Not really interested in your gender self-identification.

Nope!. You are either male or female. You not about to confuse us because you are confused yourself.
