It’s that time of year!
The Billboard Music Awards are back for its 2019 instalment and today the much anticipated nominees were revealed.
This year’s BBMAs host Kelly Clarkson as well as Dan + Shay were on-hand for the partial announcement this morning on the TODAY Show.
In the time since, the full list of finalists for the May 1st ceremony (which airs live on new network NBC from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas) has surfaced.

These categories ? First off every category has the exact same nominees.
And since when is XXXTentacion an “R&B Artist”??
And how is Ariana nominated in all the “Top Artist..” awards but none of her songs are nominated in the songs categories?
This is goofy. At this point, the only seemingly legit award shows right now are BET Awarfs and Soul Train Awards.
You’d think they know better, but the billboard awards puts anybody black in the r&b category, regardless of what type of music they actually make. They’ve always gotten it wrong. The BET awards and Soul Train awards surpassed these bigger award shows a looong time ago.

I remember when they put Rihanna in the R&B category. I forgot what era it was but I was flabbergasted bc clearly she’s a pop artist. A fu**ing joke.
Exactly, I remember. And it was when Rihanna was making straight pop music, not an r&b influence in sight. Only Girl in the world, We Found Love, etc. and based on that music, they didn’t put her in the pop category. It didn’t make any sense. Rihanna is a pop artist. She belonged right alongside the Katy’s and Gaga’s of the world. R&b is Toni Braxton, Ledisi, Alicia, etc. Nominating any and every black artist like Rihanna and Xxxtentacion, takes away the recognition from artists who ACTUALLY make that music and the Traditional R&b artists the category really applies to get overlooked in the process. That’s what Tamar was trying to say when she discussed this years ago. And it also typecasts black people who are influencing a different genre, I.e., Fka twigs.
Billboard continues to disrespect R&B music by merging Hip-Hop and R&B like it is the same. It is not the same. Furthermore, there should be a category for Traditional R&B.

Mariah has the best r&b album period. And she has sold more pure copies than the other r&b artists. This sh## is made up & fake. Some of these artists don’t even go in certain categories. This show is trash. They be creating awards for certain artists.
