Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.
So, as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’ allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.
Next up? We salute eclectic singer Kelis and her last run in the Billboard Hot 100’s top 20:
After multiple swings at the bat in the late 90s and early 2000s, Alternative R&B singer Kelis finally found some long overdue appreciation on the Hot 100 courtesy of her ‘Tasty’ 2003 hit, ‘Milkshake.’ Bringing all the boys (and apparently their wallets) to the yard thanks to its Neptunes-produced beat, the song was hoisted to a peak of #3 on the tally – a career high for the singer to date. While no other single from the album came anywhere near its success – which continued well into 2004 – pressure to match its run was undoubtedly placed on ‘Tasty’s follow-up, 2006’s ‘Kelis Was Here.’
Selecting ‘Bossy’ as the set’s first offering, the songstress tapped legendary rapper Too $hort to assist on the Bangladesh-produced bop. Released in early 2006, the song – a slow burner on the tally to say the least – eventually found footing as a summer jam and crashed into the top 20 in late July of the same year. Peaking at #16 this week 13 years ago, ‘Bossy’ – the unexpected hit – became the third Hot 100 entry of Kelis career to date (as a leading act) and last placement in the top 20.
Eventually certified double platinum by the RIAA (a feat not even ‘Milkshake’ can attest), ‘Bossy’ rests securely as a fan favorite from the singer-songwriter’s criminally underrated catalog. Look below to see who joined her in the top 25 this week in 2006:

She is a hit in Europe and she has her own business
No she is not!
Her vocal styling works over so many genres of music, it’s incredible.
Wow besides Rihanna and Janet that 2006 chart list has a lot of artist’s last hits on it just like the 2019 charts has a lot of artists’s last hits on it.
Yooooo Kelli’s is so under appreciated it’s not even funny! Looking at that chart list brings back so many memories! 2006 was a great year for music and those songs will all be classics!
