After Becoming Her 79th Hit, Beyonce’s ‘Spirit’ Slips Out of the Hot 100 in Week 2 [Chart Check]

Published: Wednesday 31st Jul 2019 by Rashad

Beyond its domination of the movie box office (racking up over $1 billion globally as we reported here), the live action remake of ‘The Lion King’ is being celebrated for its contributions to the music realm as well.  In addition to cracking the top 15 of the Billboard 200 with its official soundtrack, Pop superstar Beyonce – who stars as ‘Nala’ in the film –  debuted at #2 on the same chart with her new project, ‘The Gift’ (which was inspired by the film).

Following the re-entry of 2016’s ‘Lemonade’ and her live album, ‘Homecoming,’ ‘The Gift’ came as her third trip to the top 10 of the tally this year alone.  And, while its lead single – the anthemic ‘Spirit’ – sent fans soaring into a frenzy upon the release of its colorful, African-influenced music video, its roar may be proving bigger than its bite.

See what we mean inside:

The good news?  Its #98 debut on last week’s Hot 100 marked a career milestone for the diva as it became her 79th placement on the tally, 61st as a solo artist.  With ‘Spirit’s appearance on the chart she temporarily tied Taylor Swift for second place among women with the most Hot 100 hits (Nicki Minaj rests in first place).

The bad news? ‘Spirit’ vanished its second week.  However, its disappearance – which occurred the week its parent album charted – saw it replaced with 2 more gems from the set.  The result?  Bey, now with 81 placements over her illustrious career, distanced herself from Swift to claim sole ownership of the second place title for most Hot 100 hits (among women).

Look below to see which tunes from ‘The Gift’ landed in this week’s Hot 100.

  2. Ropeburn July 31, 2019

LOL! All that mess they was talkin about Madonna and yet it looks like the person they need to worry about is their own fave! #KarmaIsABish

Listen Linda beyonce is fine and will always be fine just as madonna will be too. Who cares about charting bro?
If I like it then I like it

One week at #98 is a hit??

    • Jasmine The Real Princess August 1, 2019

If that’s the case I’m not surprised why Flopnika is constantly bragging about her numbers and the records she breaks with a catalogue full of ‘hits’ charting at the lower half of Billboard lol

      • ??? August 1, 2019

lmaooooooo QueenNika never flopped a song out of the hot 100 after only 1 week bug, try again lmfaoooooooooo #949yonce #TheFLOPPINGking #DontComeForNickiWhenYourFaveFLOPPEDharder

      • Faf August 1, 2019

When did nicki say all her songs were hits?

  5. King1234 July 31, 2019

First off I honestly think beyonce doesn’t care about charting anymore. I feel like shes above that and it doesnt matter. She releases quality music that’s all I want.

    • Jasmine July 31, 2019

That is a LIE. She certainly cares about charting which is why she releases every little thing she does like Homecoming and her new single from that album. That is why she is releasing 3 singles off of the Lion King soundtrack. That is why she released a Video for every song on Lemonjuice ?. The problem is NOT her. It is unloyal fans who don’t put their money up to support their fav.

      • iamdiego August 1, 2019

why do yall do this? yall try to drag her and then when she does something else big (like finaly releasing her solo album) yall will continue to have meltdowns. im sure deep down you know that thats a whole different ball game. also, she doesnt need to always be number 1, top 10, or top 50 for that matter. if she cared she would actually promote the material. she would be on everything (morning-daytime-latenight shows, award shows, or discounting like your fav) but doesnt need to because she gets her money in advance. as far as i see it, it does not matter if her songs are hits or flopping out the h100. she has already been paid for her services unlike some of your favs who have to depend on microwaved hits to sustain a music career. quality>>>

      • Desiree August 1, 2019

If she get paid in advance then that makes it worse — what’s the incentive to put out a quality album if you’ve already been paid and don’t care about charting.

    • Jodecie July 31, 2019

EXACTLY!! Quality over Quantity anyday. She delivers great music and superb talent she dose not care about numbers

      • Haterz Gon‘ Hate July 31, 2019

It’s clear in the current musical landscape Beyoncé fans A: Aren’t bothered about singles B: Aren’t checking for big ballad Bey C:Always buy her SOLO albums because her ALL solo efforts are all platinum + and went to No.1. Conclusion: Beyoncé fans engage when she produces a whole studio body of SOLO work and everything else is a nice to have. I stopped buying Beyoncé singles after IASF but have every album.

    • Naïme August 1, 2019

Please stop being delusional… she hasn’t release anything good since 4. Her music is pure trash nowadays and you f****** know it. If lemonade and everything is love are quality to you then you have the worst taste someone can ever have. Now, BDAY, DIL, 4 and IASF are great bodies of work, so is the Cadillac records OST. But that Beyoncé is dead and buried. So much talent that went to waste. A shame her camel brainwashed her.

      • Haterz Gon‘ Hate August 1, 2019

Here’s why your point is invalid. If she hasn’t released anything ‘Good’ why are her solo albums opening at No.1 with strong PHYSICAL sales? It doesn’t make sense that you would take your ass to the shop and BUY something you don’t think is “Good”.

Point 2: Why are her attendance figures increasing over they last 3 albums? Tell he how logically if people don’t perceive something to be “Good” (your word) why are more people going to see Beyoncé in concert to the point where she has evolved from selling out arenas to stadiums? I’ll wait…… The numbers are the numbers – your lame ass loose walls hater opinion does not factor in very obvious and publically available FACTS.

Go find some joy in your life instead of projecting your failed existence on someone who’s fame and fortune is unbothered by your lies. ????????????????

      • ??? August 1, 2019

lmaoooooooo her last 3 albums shouldn’t have FLOPPED so hard if thats all the case, so stop with the delusional essay, you bugs dont accept defeat too well do you lmfaooooooooooooo #949yonce #TheFLOPPINGking

      • Naïme August 1, 2019

HATERZ GONA HÂTE, you just made my day LMAO. Her sales off her last 3 albums aren’t good AT ALL. Last time I checked lemonade sold 2 millions…

Second of all, I never denied her talent, that is why her concerts are always sold out, rightfully so because she is the best performer ever.

Stating the facts aren’t hating. Her current material is pure garbage. But it is material that your pathetic ass seem to get his life from.

And thank you so much for caring about my life since yours seems to be filled with delusion and your unhealthy love for this woman who, despite her talent, is a piece of trash. You dumbass. Kiss.

    • Oh na na September 13, 2019

Lol u cannot be above that. Non charting music can still be great but Beyoncé’s simply is not. An artist on her level should have better songs at this point. She’s just like Eminem imo.

  6. Meme July 31, 2019

Lmfao well well well. Look at the grape juice finally partaking in unbiased journalism.

The thing is….this has been Beyoncé’s history for the past what….3 albums, 8yrs.

Her music has no longevity on radio or on the charts. They disappear literally within a month. Her talent is undeniable but her music isn’t always good. Perhaps it’s misses more than it hits.

With that being said…the lion kin album is a step in the right direction. She’s singing and making music instead of rapping and trying to appeal to kids.

    • Haterz Gon‘ Hate July 31, 2019

The interesting thing is, pleasing radio and following traditional/chart placement and release strategies are about conforming to established industry practices – Beyoncé has already said if you listen to her music that she didn’t trust radio and record labels – just because many before her have done it the traditional route it doesn’t mean she can’t break the mould.

Haters said they wanted her to stop sing rapping and go back to making more vocal bases tracks – she’s done that and haterz are still mad.

Pleasing radio and chart placements are after all a measure by old industry standards – if she wasn’t selling out Stadiums I’d be concerned – it appears her fans have decided how they want to engage and it works from a financial and artist visibility point of view.

      • Meme August 1, 2019

Nice prospective and point of view.

But I actually feel Beyoncé’s decisions to not follow traditional releases and industry norms etc is a direct reaction to her downward slope in the industry. Beyonce isn’t dumb. She knows that she can’t sell, have #1 records or massive singles anymore. So she shift her focus and her format.

    • iamdiego August 1, 2019

she is very capible picking songs and top producers to create #1 hits. as we all know she shifted her focus back in 2011 with 4. yall should be used to this by now. since 2013-2014 she has does very little promo. she made these decisions not the industry. she didnt wait for them to chew her up and spit her out when they wanted. she said f you pay me. and thats what they are doing.

      • Meme August 1, 2019

Very little promo? You kidding? Beyonce releases videos for every songs, she has major promos from HBO and Netflix. Her promo may not be interviews or TV appearance (which no A lister so anymore) but she def has promo. She also uses the same top song writers and produces that others like Rihanna uses but the difference is, her songs are never hits. How do you explain that?

    • Chainlightning August 2, 2019

It’a not unbias . It’s still a “beyonce won” write up. Had this been anybody it would have been considered a flop. Remember Samantha being unable to hide his humor and delight in the 460 debacle.

Karma is biting hard as hell this era . Good Luck getting that Oscar you speak of Beyonce

  7. Clarkson July 31, 2019

Even vine rappers, Myspace rappers last longer on the chart than beyonce.
She doesn’t deserve all those Grammys.

  10. Ratedxxx August 1, 2019

She claimed she didnt care about streaming…1 year later released all her music on streaming

  11. BOOMKACK123 August 1, 2019

Doesn’t say much about quality, seeing what’s dominating airwaves these days… Bey aside, nobody wants music that means anything. It’s all just a social media game and gimmick.

  12. #TheTruth August 1, 2019

I think everyone needs to wait her next solo release to see how it performs. You are comparing what is not comparable.

      @Gaga.. – hahaha

  15. GaGa’s Tampon August 1, 2019

But I was told that songs which are featured in hit movies do well. So why is Spirit a song which features in a smash movie that’s about to gross $1,5 billion dollars at the box office a flop?

I hope this flop humbles those that have been belittling Gaga’s success with ASIB.

    • iamdiego August 1, 2019

the only reason gaga got asib was because beyonce chose not to do it. remember? and that was a great question you asked. the answer is its not a flop. how can it be? everytime the scene comes on when simba goes back to the prideland you hear beyonce singing spirit lol. her impact lmao yes 1.5 billion listeners. whew!

      • ??? August 1, 2019

lmaoooooo keep clinging to that excuse bug, roach backed out of asib because it would have FLOPPED if she did it and everybody knows it. and why didnt her “impact” sell more than 949 albums or keep Dead from flopping out of the hot 100 after a week? her impact right lmfaooooooooooo #949yonce #TheFLOPPINGking #DontComeForGagaWhenYourFaveIsAWholeFLOP

      • Desiree August 1, 2019

With 1.5 billion for the movie so far and Spirit being played during a pivotal point in the movie you would think it would be the number one record in the world to correlate with the movie. It seems after leaving the theater people must’ve lost interest in the track even with an interview and video. Even all the people who went just to see Beyoncé aren’t supporting her track for the movie.

  16. Banks no tyra August 1, 2019

  17. Lol August 1, 2019

So #98 is a hit now? Those other songs are gonna fall off too so are those “hits” ?

  18. Truth August 1, 2019

Lol y’all really think she care about “Spirt” charting??? That was for the Lion King Movie. She definitely is in a difference space. She don’t care about numbers anymore. She is more focus on culture awareness these days.

    • ??? August 1, 2019

lmaooooooooooooooooo yeah right, you wouldnt be saying that if it hadnt FLOPPED.

    • Chainlightning August 2, 2019

Stooooop! She does care! Who puts out music and don’t care if it does well? The Hive is really trying to raise the limbo stick so their fave can slip under it. Stop it! A song connected to a billion dollar film should be performing better. PERIOD!

    • Oh na na September 13, 2019

If u don’t care about numbers get outta the music biz. She’s not no indie musician she’s Beyoncé. She just can’t choose songs like Rihanna. Bey should’ve chose Tierra lol and not strategically chose Rih.

  19. meeee August 1, 2019

    you mean ENTRY.
all of a sudden she makes music for philanthropic purposes only??? lmao…. at least it looks like you HIVE people have accepted she can no longer produce hits

    • Oh na na September 13, 2019

      Lol

  20. Desiree August 1, 2019

I feel the reason her last 2 SOLO albums did so well even though her music hasn’t been good is because she makes it that you have to physically purchase the album before consuming it. Self titled was a surprise album where you could only purchase the whole album and Lemonade was only available for streaming on Tidal so you had to purchase the album prior to listening to it both would equate to higher sales. Nobody wanted or cared for the album with Jay after apesh*t nothing else is memorable. Homecoming were old songs performed live so no wonder that didn’t do well. The Gift was nice but definitely doesn’t have much replay potential I enjoyed Brown Skin Girl but Mood 4 Eva is just too all over the place. With The Gift I wish more of the African artists flourished or received the single treatment. As for selling out stadiums regardless of how mediocre her music has been since 4 she is still known as a great performer and puts on an awesome show so no wonder people would purchase tickets to see her rearrange her music. I did not enjoy the gift but I like that she’s becoming more culturally aware weather it’s genuine or a gimmick. I do believe all this Beyoncé and Lion King press and how Disney and others have been giving her high regards as related to the movie is to secure her an Oscar for this album which I don’t think is Oscar worthy. She said a long time ago she wanted an Oscar and doing music for movies maybe the best way she obtain it and it’s an added bonus that her and Jay have been throwing Oscar parties the past few years so I’m sure she’s talked to those with voting privileges. Again the movie nor The Gift are Oscar worthy.

  21. 2bad2bme August 1, 2019

Meanwhile MegaFlop slipped out of the Hot 100 for 2 weeks now. Where is the report on that?

    • ??? August 1, 2019

lmaoooooo because megaHIT still lasted longer than spiritFLOP bug lmfaoooooooo

  22. Nene August 1, 2019

This will be the downfall of her career, if she continues non-promotion of her singles with live performances. I feel like she feels she’s above it all, and that attitude doesn’t sell. We haven’t had anything ground breaking since lemonade, even then the songs were experiemental, she’s stopped focussing on solid cohesive songs, just like ApeSht these songs won’t reach the upper heights of the charts. She needs to be humble and fame doesn’t last forever. She has put herself on a pedestal far too high, that the ordinary person just feels she’s not like one of us. Even Mariah prompted her epic Caution.

    • S.U.P.E.R.S.T.A.R.!. August 1, 2019

@Nene – “Even Mariah prompted her epic Caution.” – Explain this comment. I don’t understand.

  23. Stevone l Jackson August 1, 2019

Good morning now look at this The wack-ass beehive talk all that s*** but don’t support their queen bee isn’t that ironic they’re full of s*** just like Beyonce is full of s*** laughing my ass off.

  24. Stevone l Jackson August 1, 2019

Now this is funny to me these full of s*** ass fans are funny now when Mariah album sales start slipping after 30 years in the business these b****** came for her throat and when Mariah fans said quality over quantity and s*** like Mariah is not trying to I don’t care about the charts anymore the same mother f****** had all s*** to say now they b**** who supposed to still be in her prime is not charging like she’s supposed to they coming up with the same f****** excuses this is so f****** funny and ridiculous it’s a sad f****** Shame somebody call the Exterminator and get rid of these Mothafuckas.

    • iamdiego August 1, 2019

its not the same sis. mariah had more hit songs albums in the 90’s, and dont forget mariah started flopping in 2001. 10 yrs into her career when music was still selling so dont try it. she had a couple successfull albums in 2000’s and 0 successfull albums in 2010’s so far. bey has not released a solo album in 3 yrs and has only released 3 per decade. she takes her time and is consistant. now when she finally starts doing side projects yall in between time yall run with those numbers. hopefully both will be a part of the few artist to chart in the 90’s , 00’s, 10’s and 20’s (4 different decades) lol. I can definatly see beyonce with another number 1 album by 2020 when she releases her 7th studio album.

  25. Stevone l Jackson August 1, 2019

Last thing let’s not forget this thieving ass b**** Beyonce done stole Haley and Chloe’s musical style which is a damned shame. F****** thief and none of you b****** seem to realize that that this b**** then stole them little girls musical style right from under their nose while she acting like she want to support them and put them on her Record labal and she just wanted to steal there s*** and now all their influences has been in Beyonce’s music lately damn shame you m************ beehive fans are the dumest f****** fans I’ve ever seen in my entire existence.

She swag jacked a whole culture and flopped . I feel bad for the featured artist . Beyonce didn’t help to bring them mainstream. They are not even mentioned .

Stop pressing about other acts and focus on your fave. It’s clear the B***** is not that big and the General Public was really the reason for her success. Now they don’t care about her that much anymore .
