Chart Rewind: Spice Girls’ ‘2 Become 1’ Made Its Hot 100 Debut This Week in 1997

Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’ allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.

This week we’re planning 2 revisit ‘2 Become 1’ by Spice Girls. More inside:

‘2 Become 1’ – the third single released from the quintet’s massively successful ‘Spice’ debut (which sold over 23 million records worldwide since its 1996 debut – stands as a fan favorite in the group’s small, but celebrated discography. Co-written by all of the group’s members alongside Matt Rowe and Richard Stannard, the song may have gone on to become their third consecutive top 5 hit with its peak of #4 in the US but this week in 1997 it made an impressive debut at #6.

Praised for its sly promotion of safe sex and inclusion of all five vocalists (namely Posh Spice whose voice was not as prominently featured in their songs as her counterparts), ‘2’ – despite being the last time the group would ever visit the Hot 100’s top 5 – did eventually earn Platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

“I’ll Be Missing You” and “Mo Money Mo Problems” were jams ?❤️ The 90s were a good decade for music.
