It’s been days since Lizzo first turned heads with a risqué, buttocks-baring ensemble donned at the Los Angeles Lakers vs. Minnesota Timberwolves game, but the chatter around the jaw-dropping incident shows no sign of slowing.
From talk shows to social media, the debate about the lines between self-expression, fat-shaming, and body positivity rages on – a conversation further impelled by the ‘Truth Hurts’ hitmaker’s recent justification of her wardrobe choice (click here to see it).
Some of the most controversial input has come from Liz’s longtime nemesis, fellow rapstress Azealia Banks. In a lengthy rant uploaded to her official social media handle, Banks simultaneously praised and slammed the Grammy-nominee for her ‘inappropriate’ attire, suggested the entire event was attention-seeking, and even branded her a ‘stupid fat Black girl.’

The overall message may house elements of truth and surprising astuteness, but the intent – be it well or not – gets lost in Banks’ harsh delivery. This is especially the case when the analysis includes covert ridicule. Her weigh ins on issues that impact Black culture, regardless of how well they are conveyed, often end in self-defeat and contradiction because she perpetuates the very ideas she’s combating. Oy vey!
Be that as it may, longtime fans of the ‘Ice Princess’ know this isn’t the first time she’s lent Lizzo a few cold words. Click here to see what we mean.
