Mya, who recently released a single named ‘Space & Time‘, caught up with DJ Ace of 1xtra last week and revealed that she believes Ms. Walker is one of the artists who is flying the flag for R&B music for today’s generation.
She had this to say when she was asked why she felt R&B music made in the 90s still captivates consumers today…almost 30 years later.
It was all about expression and wearing your heart on your sleeve. Men and women weren’t afraid to do either.
Everything was a little softer then. Today, there is a different time of culture- there’s still lots of R&B out today but it isn’t promoted as much or placed on radio because it’s a lot more expensive to make- but its considered more Adult Contemporary.
You still have R&B artists today (new or old) who are touring because there’s something about musicality. The 90s R&B is so special because of the percussion that always slapped and the chord changes that touch your soul. It makes you feel something. That’s why it’s so special all around the world. It always wins your heart and your soul.
Then she listed some of the artists she has been listening to.
Nicole Bus, she’s amazing. Tori Kelly, Ari Lennox, Lucky Daye, Tone Stith, H.E.R, Summer Walker…a lot of them are musicians and it shows up in their delivery. I love it.
The ‘Moodring’ maestra also revealed that she would be open to taking part in a Verzuz battle with one of her contemporaries because she feels that the series is far more celebratory than it is competitive.
