Published: Thursday 13th Aug 2020 by Sam

Ciara salutes the voices speaking up and out for racial equality on new release ‘Rooted (ft. Ester Dean).’

Arriving on the heels of the mass Black Lives Matter protests, the song and its accompanying video mirror the mantra – celebrating melanin in all its majestic marvel and magic.

Upon the unleashing of the visual moments ago, CiCI revealed that she shot the clip just two days before giving birth to her second son Win Harrison Wilson.

Watch Ciara blaze while pregnant below….

Meaningful and hard-hitting. We approve, do you?!

Personally, it’s a no for me. The buzzy “melanin”, “nappy headed”, “Brown Skin Poppin”, “Black Excellence” trickled into songs is becoming contrived and rather cringe. It’s different when it’s a hashtag, but very surface as far as lyrical matter is concerned.

I know it’s supposed to be uplifting, but there’s no depth for me. I look forward to her other releases though.

And imo all of this after she openly pandered to the pop crowd her last go round, making that bland ass music when we all know what she’s capable of. This just seems forced.

      Exactly…what you said.

    • XYZ August 13, 2020

      Yes!

    • Robin August 13, 2020

You are so right. I am back but is hard to watch lately. They are all trying to hard. We are not stupid.

      • Lyka August 13, 2020

This song is better than a lot songs she did release in the last couple years….

    • August 13, 2020

You feel this way because you are brainwashed.

  2. Jamila August 13, 2020

Ciara told her original fanbase to kiss her tail by insisting on going pop. Now she’s saying all her songs have melanin? Girl what? Where?
Now she’s repping ATL again? But didn’t she turn her back on Polo Da Don and go Hollywood?

The Wakanda t-shirts, name dropping Harriett Tubman, saying something about “brown milk in ‘em” while gesturing towards her b******… this song is bad and incredibly corny.

    • Ugghh August 13, 2020

Black girls don’t listen to pop?

  3. Zion August 13, 2020

  5. tyty August 13, 2020

Okay… Some of these black power songs lack any substance so end up you sounding silly. It doesn’t feel like she believes what she is singing. The afro wigs arghh. Cici always has gems buts it’s evident hard-hitting songs like this just don’t work for her. When will she get it? I was listening to her previous work and her voice is best suited to songs like I bet, promise, like a boy etc….

  7. Monica4Life August 13, 2020

I like the song but Ciara’s visual aesthetic is what seems forced. Im not sure this will connect but glad to see she’s on her grind…

Wtf is going on with CiCi????? I miss her goodies/promise era. She used to delivering hottest sh#t. She pretty messed up after she trying to go pop

  12. PinotNoir August 13, 2020

    Clearly her white team’s idea.

Yet better than self-indulgent 🐝. “Rooted” has oomph & energy!

    Tamar, nix your afrobeat plans.

I’m black, I have always loved my blackness. I didn’t just started loving my blackness because of the shift in the way society view black.

All these celebrities spent years trying to fit into Hollywood standard of beauty and now from no where they are acting like the have been pushing this movement. all we hear them talk about now is Black.

Fakes, only here to capitalise on the change.

    This will still flop.

  14. Lyka August 13, 2020

The song dont sound bad better than a looooooott of songs she put out over the years. This remind me more of her beginning stages…….she thought Pop will serve her and it didnt work out. The most stupid thing she did was stop working with the people who helped her create her sound!!

  15. Yandi August 13, 2020

Oh, I see…so only Beyonce can do the “Black” thing? The Afrobeats? Ok. When she does it, y’all eat it up. If you don’t like Cici, don’t comment. Damn! I personally like it.

    • PinotNoir August 13, 2020

      I 💞 it, too.

  16. Tori August 13, 2020

Its quite hilarious that everyone wants Ciara to make R&B music and is always upset when she releases a pop song, yet when she does go R&B no one ever buys the album. Then they talk about her being this great performer but don’t buy her concert tickets. This has been going on for years. So y’all don’t think Ciara is just going to do what the f*** she wants to do? If she wants to do pop, let her! Yall aint listening to her ass anyway. Y’all still complaining that she released “Thinking Bout You” as a single but y’all literally let “Greatest Love” flop like s***. “I Bet” didn’t take off because it was R&B, it took off because she was talking s*** about Future. Y’all purposely find something wrong with every single thing she releases.

  17. #WAP August 13, 2020

Ciara stop making music. Unless you’re giving us another ride or goodies, hang it up and be a mommy. You’re embarrassing yourself and your family. Stop spending Russell’s money on this trash music

  18. Bettie Clayton August 13, 2020

    IT FA4 BETTER 5HAN WAP.

  19. DC3 FOREVER August 13, 2020

LMFAO!!!!!!!!! This was sooooooo forced and cringeworthy

  20. Ropeburn August 15, 2020

It’s a hot instrumental but every Black musician doesn’t need to make 50-11 songs about being Black or their “nappy” hair just cause that’s what’s trending with these protests. It’s too repetitive and you can support the cause in other ways. This goes for Beyonce too!

    • Jai August 15, 2020

Beyonce has been singing about her roots for years now. She’s rocked afros, nigerian designers and worn geles since she was a youngin. Where were you when she released Run the world with the Togolese dancers? Where were you when she was getting called ghetto for wearing her cornrows and crotchets? Do your research. Ciara on the other hand has been messy with her pop ambitions.. alienating her core audience is a nono.. she believes pop means Britney and Taylor… she literally hired non black dance crews and had them cultural appropriating and more obvious stuff… she’s flat out pandering and copying beyonce… from coachella, to now…
