It’s been over 22 years since Brandy and Monica ruled the charts with one of the biggest duets of all-time, ‘The Boy is Mine.’
But, while its effect on music history books cannot be understated Mo believes too much of the focus on the tune’s impact is on the rumored-turned-real life rivalry between the two (which eventually spilled over to their respective fan bases).
Though initially suggesting they were on the fence about participating in a #VERZUZ battle against each other (as we reported here), August 22 brought with it news the hitmaking duo had finally agreed to participate in the phenomenon – making it one of the most highly anticipated duels to date.
Ahead of the showdown, Monica dished on what viewers can expect and what she hopes the true result of her forthcoming time with Brandy brings.

Taking to ‘ET’ to chat with resident anchor Nischelle Turner, Mo talked at length about the song’s enduring impact – positive and negative – on music lovers.
ON WHY ‘BOY IS MINE’ RESONATED WITH MUSIC LOVERS:
“We’re different in the way that we dress and the things that we’ve experienced and where we grew up and I think those differences are what made ‘The Boys Is Mine’ so special.”
ON HOW ‘THE BOY IS MINE’ FUELED A RIVALRY BETWEEN SHE & BRANDY:
“It was not something that I would say was anyone’s fault,” Monica says now, admitting, “We all added to it and after a while it became real.”
ON HOW SHE FEELS ABOUT FANS PITTING THEM AGAINST EACH OTHER:
“It gets a little bit frustrating for both she and I when it becomes, ‘No, I like her better. Well, I like her better.’”
“We don’t have to do that [now],” she continued. “[I don’t like] the idea of our issues overshadowing how great of a song it really was and how much of a blessing it was for both of us to be a part of it.”
ON HOW SHE WANTS ‘VERZUZ’ TO END RUMORS OF THEIR FEUD FOREVER:
“We’ve long removed ourselves from the dramatics of it but we’re gonna have a very in-depth conversation that may possibly be shared even with the audience because there’s a lot that happens, the fans have no idea what really took place, what really caused the initial friction,” she said. “Hopefully, we can help some of the younger artists avoid doing the same thing because we did a whole lot more together than we did apart.”
ON IF THEY’LL PERFORM ‘BOY IS MINE’ LIVE AT THE VERZUZ:
“I’ll see what she wants to do when she finally gets to Atlanta,” Monica says. “We’ll sit down and figure out which direction we want to go and how we want to do it. I just look forward to what Monday will be. It’ll be a celebration,” she concludes.
