Chart Check [Hot 100]: The Weeknd’s ‘Blinding Lights’ Ties All-Time Record for Most Weeks in Top 10

Published: Tuesday 17th Nov 2020 by Rashad

In summer 2019, Post Malone‘s name was penciled in Hot 100 history when his song, ‘Circles,’ logged a whopping 39 weeks in the tally’s top 10.  The win was all the more noteworthy as the previous recordholder was ‘Sunflower,’ another Malone song, which captured a 33-week run in the same chart region during its popularity peak.

Once thought an insurmountable feat, the refreshed Hot 100 reveals the GRAMMY nominee’s reign in record books is set to be dimmed by ‘Blinding Lights’ – the 2020 megahit from his ‘Ghost’ co-star The Weeknd.

Details inside:

50 weeks ago, The Weeknd (born Abel Tesfaye) was ruling the Hot 100 with his ‘After Hours’ hit, ‘Heartless,’ when ‘Blinding Lights’ made its #11 debut.  In the time since, ‘Lights’ – which has earned a record-setting 33 weeks in the chart’s top 5 – has also logged a whopping 39 weeks in the top 10 overall.

The chart tenancy ties that of Malone.

Billboard reports:

“The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” retreats 4-5 on the Hot 100, after spending four weeks at No. 1. It ranks in the top five for a record-extending 33rd week, while adding a record tying 39th week in the top 10, matching Post Malone’s “Circles.”

*****

It’s likely ‘Lights’ will continue to shine in the top 10 next week, meaning Tesfaye will not only own the longest-running top 5 song in history but also the longest-running top 10 ever.

The triumph comes as one of many 2020 has handed the 30-year-old, including last week’s announcement he’s set to headline the 2021 Super Bowl Halftime Show (click here to read more).
