‘Best Friend’ has given Saweetie her best start on the Hot 100 yet.
Despite boasting previous top 40 bangers, ‘My Type’ and ‘Tap In,’ over the course of her short but storied career, both tunes were slow burners that started in the lowest quadrant of the singles chart before being boosted to the top 25 on the backs of social media challenges.
Now, thanks to strong support from rhythmic radio, digital downloads, and impressive streaming figures on Spotify, Tidal, and Apple Music, the Doja Cat-assisted ‘Best Friend’ looks well on its way to following the chart trajectories of its predecessors.
Released January 7, the Dr. Luke-produced bop was given a major launch on the wings of a big budget, Dave Meyers-directed music video (seen above).
That venture – coupled with an onslaught of press performed by Saweetie in its support in the week that followed – helped secure the tune a #39 premiere on the refreshed Hot 100. The opening comes as the highest of the femcee’s career and surpasses her previous best debut, the #76 premiere of 2020’s ‘Back to the Streets’ (as we reported here).
For Doja, the arrival of ‘Friend’ marks her second highest Hot 100 premiere to date and follows the #32 bow of her 2020 Ariana Grande duet, ‘Motive.’
‘Best Friend’ marks the respective third career appearance of both artists in the Hot 100’s top 40.
