New Song: Jennifer Hudson – ‘Here I Am (Singing My Way Home)’ [from the ‘Respect’ Soundtrack]

Published: Friday 18th Jun 2021 by Rashad

With just two months separating movie lovers from the long-awaited premiere of the big screen Aretha Franklin biopic, ‘Respect,’ expect to see much of its star – Academy & GRAMMY Award-winning star Jennifer Hudson – across TV screens, print, Web and radio over the coming weeks in its support.

As it pertains to tackling the latter platforms, Hudson has already lifted the lid on ‘Here I Am (Singing My Way Home)’ – the first official single from the film’s soundtrack.

Co-written with legendary singer-songwriter Carole King (who famously penned Franklin’s ‘Natural Woman’) and produced by Will.i.am, ‘Here I Am’ serves as the soundtrack’s only original song – a bid in the right direction for 2022 Oscar glory.

“Music is such a living and breathing character in this film, as it was in Ms. Franklin’s life,” Hudson revealed in a statement. “The process of creating this song was like constructing the greatest tribute I could possibly offer to her spirit. It was the final exhale of this extraordinary project and one that I let out with complete fulfillment. Being able to do so with Carole and Jamie was an incredible privilege…Our goal was to show that music was always the anchor for Ms. Franklin, in all that she did, and I hope this song illustrates the strength of her voice – both literally and figuratively – which always brought her home.”

Look inside to hear ‘Here’ and tell us if it lives up to J.Hud’s declaration.

Has the voice but the song quality is always lacking.. that’s why she hasn’t made it to the top of the charts after her debut.. but of course this song is gonna win all the awards just because the movie is gonna be big.

Effie White part 2. She is so overrated.

Aretha Franklin. Effie White. Two totally different characters. Jennifer doesn’t get the full credits she deserves. After this film, more ppl will RESPECT her. She’s carrying this torch beautifully

I don’t know if it’s their intention, but this sounds like a 2nd act reprise in a Broadway production. It sounds good if I think of it like that.

Yea I’m not here for an original song for a biopic movie. I’m pretty sure Aretha wouldn’t be interested either. This was a moment for her catalogue to shine.

Secondly this first minute of this is a loud blaring mess. She gets it to right sometimes and then other times just so wrong.

BeYAWNce pulled the same nonsense trick when she played Etta James. They wrote her a new song – when Etta had plenty of hits to sing – in hopes it would be a backdoor to an Oscar.

Jennifer cant sing like Aretha. And she is to skinny on the cover for the movie.

If she couldn’t sing like Aretha, then I’m sure Aretha wouldn’t have personally handpicked her 🤔Watch the movie and learn sometime! Young Ree(Columbia years) was pretty much the same size as Jennifer. She didn’t gain weight until the later 60s after tumultuous marriage and then got back skinny in the 70s.

    Just horrendous

She’s trying too hard!!! She thinks she’s really Aretha 😂

WHY is there an original track on a biopic soundtrack? Seems like pandering to me. Disrespectful to Aretha’s legacy. The song is wack by the way. J.Hud hasn’t dropped any good music since 2008.

A lot of biopics have an original song….

She doesn’t look or sound like Aretha Franklin. She screams too much. 🙉

Smh ignorance is bliss…I can’t wait until this film drops so that you haters can see the full transformation into Aretha. From the speaking voice, stage mannerisms, to the vocals….Jen fully embodied Ree! It’s called acting for a reason. Don’t let this record fool you…it’s just Jen honoring Ree’s life in her own way.

Ok Jennifer, we still don’t see it for you sis. You embodied yourself judging by the clips.
