Mary J. Blige Responds To Backlash Over Super Bowl As Petition Against the ‘Vulgar’ Show Passes 15,000 Signatures

Published: Wednesday 16th Feb 2022 by Rashad

It’s a good week to be Mary J. Blige.

As if being part of a historic, Hip Hop collective at this week’s Super Bowl Halftime Show wasn’t enough (February 13), her new album, Good Morning Gorgeous, is set to rise to the top of R&B charts next week – a feat outshined only by the critical acclaim it’s being given.

But, just as the diva reiterated her request for no more drama during her stunning Super Bowl set, drama is exactly what ensued after the showing as some viewers complained the content was too provocative.

Taking to ‘Ebro in the Morning’ Wednesday (February 16), the Queen of Hip Hop Soul weighed in on the hoopla.  Look inside to see what she said:

Despite saying she hadn’t really heard many of the complaints about the show (as seen at the 21:30 minute mark), MJB still addressed the matter.

“That’s a small conversation compared to how huge that is. Like, hip-hop is here. It’s more than just a small thing. It’s just as big as rock ‘n’ roll right now. I don’t pay attention to all of that. I’m just paying attention to how we got raised up. Someone looked at us—well, somebody looked at [Dr.] Dre and said, ‘We need you.’ And Dre looked at me and said, ‘I want you.’ And so on and so forth with all his friends. So, I really don’t care about [the backlash].”

The backlash in question, which includes registered complaints to the FCC, mentions everything from the lyrics of some of the songs performed to the dancer’s outfits, Eminem taking a knee, and more.

In response to the showing deemed ‘vulgar’ and ‘inappropriate’ by American Family Association group One Million Moms, the organization’s leader Monica Cole – who says the performance was laden with ‘scantily clad rear ends,’ ‘stripper-like moves,’ and ‘crotch grabbing’ – launched a petition to have grievances heard by the NFL.

As of time reported, the number of signees has passed 15,500.

These stupid holier than thou folk have way too much time on their hands. Christ, give it a rest. These are the same people that go, “oh, well, another school shooting,” & then turn around and say we need to protect our children from Eminem taking a knee. Stupid book banning bigots. I’ve had enough of their pious bullsh*t.

This is just a bunch of uptight White women worried their men were attracted to a s*** chocolate mama. The same kinda thing happened to JLo an Shakira a few years back when people couldn’t handle their fine ass brown sugar. Sad and pathetic, but true. To MJB- YOU DO YOU BOO! I thought the show was AMAZING 🤩

Oh PLZ! How many of these parents help make “Squid Game” the most popular show on Netflix, lol

This is 2022 where TV shows & streaming networks is saturated with s/e/x & violence.

The most popular programs nowadays often contain graphic & controversial content. So clearly people are NOT demanding Family Oriented Entertainment.

She looked better with her natural Afro hair. Bleached blonde looked better to a white girl like Miranda lambert or Jessica Simpson.

I love her album. The Super Bowl performance is great

Why is that? My sister and I was born with blonde hair. We’re black so what’s the problem with Queen Mary Just say that some of you are real haters take a step back because most of your kids are into Hip hop and R&B…Let it go.

    • Dc February 17, 2022

The show was fine it’s was more tasteful then most tv shows and definitely for hip hop more subdued. For me it’s just more of white culture wanting to keep us in place. The list keeps growing no Critical race theory white people are uncomfortable no more books white peoples are uncomfortable no more kneeling and the list goes on and in now the don’t like hip hop but their kids do they just want us to not exist and that ship has sailed!

This is a cruel world with a whole lot of envy mxs. Start a petition with supporters and the numbers will outweigh them times 10. Before you start hateful remarks take a deep look in a mirror and start correcting yourself. I’m in my fifties and see way more skin on the beaches you’ll take your children too. I love you Mary & keep doing you…..

Entitlement at its best, yet again!! Just let them be great and move on!! Black entertainment at it best!! Love it or hate it, the show was 🔥🔥🔥

  13. Jess February 17, 2022

112 million people watched the Super Bowl. Less than 20,000 have silly issues with the halftime show. Comparatively, that’s nothing. It’s not even a story. Why give these people any attention?

  14. Martin February 17, 2022

How about people just grow up. We let small groups of people set pu lic opinion. 15K out of 300M plus people in the country are outraged! Why not be outraged at homelessness, racial inequality, bad treatment of our veterans, instead of some perceived moral terpitude.
Your kids go to school and hear and see worse every day than what was on the Super Bowl.
People make their own choices, don’t like it, turn the TV off… that’s called freedom of choice…..

I thought the whole act was wonderful! Each one of them brought it! Mary looked beautiful as always! And Snoop did not disappoint. You knew he was going to dress in blue and you knew he was going to Crip walk and throw signs! I loved seeIng ALL of them! I’m 62 years old and I bounced with them!

Didn’t watch it and don’t care. If you can’t play the national Anthem first and then play that b******* after. National Anthem is for America, not this b******* you play first. 😒 so the NFL can go suck. And baseball, soccer.

  18. Tree February 19, 2022

15000 people complaining about what. Your children have done and exposed their bodies way more openly in school. The millions of people who enjoyed it outweighs your 15000 uptight conservative idiots. Don’t watch and turn off your tv. You should be concerned with all these school killings that your children are exposed to.

Good for her! I loved the show! I enjoyed that each artist had a stage that represented their neighborhoods, they were able to sing individually, then come together as one.
Despite the conterversites with the NFL, the SB is huge platform and the performers did a great job of getting their messages heard.

For anyone that didn’t like the show, the television does have an off button.
