The Pop Stop: Charli XCX, Carrie Underwood, & More Deliver This Week’s Hidden Gems

Published: Saturday 19th Mar 2022 by Ryan

Readers of That Grape Juice know how passionate we are about music – whether that be past or present.

However, unlike our other segments – Retro Rewind, TGJ Replay, and From The Vault – The Pop Stop is the most in-depth look at Pop songs that may have flown under the radar over the last week that you should know, rather they be from music’s biggest stars or those on the rise.

This week, we want to highlight cuts from Charli XCX, Carrie Underwood, Joel Corry, and Rosalia.

Join us inside…

Charli XCX – Constant Repeat

It’s finally here. After much anticipation, Charli XCX has released her ‘Crash’ album – her first project since 2020. A collection of pop gems, at the heart of the album sits the magnificent ‘Constant Repeat.’ A free-spirited anthem that perfectly walks the line between optimistic and heartbroken, this song grows wings with each listen, soaring to new heights. With songs such as ‘Constant Repeat,’ Charli XCX has crafted her one of the best pop albums of the year, and in contention for her best work to date.

Carrie Underwood – Ghost Story

Carrie Underwood has returned with her first new music since her 2021 collaboration with Jason Aldean, ‘If I Didn’t Love You’. Entitled ‘Ghost Story,’ Underwood assumes the persona of a former lover, who now haunts her ex. Produced by David Garcia – who produced her ‘Cry Pretty’ album – Underwood unleashes her signature emotive vocals over steel guitar, pounding drums, and atmospheric synths. Containing all the heartbreak, bitterness, and regret that comes with ending a relationship, Underwood proves that there are no greater ghosts than the ones that come with past mistakes.

Joel Corry – What Would You Do?

Currently on tour until September and gearing up for a summer residency at Ibiza Rock, 5x Brit-Award nominated producer Joel Corry is back with his latest song; a collaboration with David Guetta and Bryson Tiller called ‘What Would You Do?’ The electronic-dance instrumental features plenty of hard-hitting synths and expertly crafted vocal effects. With a string of hit singles such as ‘Head and Heart,’ ‘Bed,’ ‘Out Out,’ and now ‘What Would You Do?” Corry proves that he is one of the best in the game right now.

Rosalia – Hentai

Rosalia is back with her latest album ‘Motomami,’ a collection of songs that stand among some of her strongest works to date. Case in point, the intimate ballad ‘Hentai,’ which was named after the triple-X manga. Across the song she gently sings about riding her partner’s “pistola” set against ‘Moon River’ inspired production. The juxtaposition helps to create a layered ballad unlike any she has created before.
