Kelis Doubles Down on Slamming ‘Disrespectful’ Beyoncé & Neptunes For Allegedly Copying Her Music: ‘It’s Thievery’

Published: Thursday 28th Jul 2022 by Rashad

Unlike legendary Gospel songstress Twinkie Clark (as we reported here), Kelis was far from appreciative for being listed among contributors to Beyonce‘s new album ‘Renaissance’ (due on digital shelves July 29).

Apparently having new reason to shout ‘I hate you so much right now,’ the 42-year-old waxed honest about her disappointment on not receiving a heads up her moderate 1999 hit ‘Get Along with You’ would be included alongside others on Bey’s forthcoming LP as a sample for the song ‘Energy.’

Inciting backlash from the Queen’s fans (affectionately called #Beyhive) for her rant, look inside to read the stinging words that still have the fan group swarming.

Fans who first noticed Kelis’ name on the ‘Renaissance’ credits assumed it was a collaboration between the divas before K launched into a tirade to clear up the confusion.

“My mind is blown too because the level of disrespect and utter ignorance of all 3 parties involved is astounding,” she wrote. “I heard about this the same way everyone else did. Nothing is ever as it seems, some of the people in this business have no soul or integrity and they have everyone fooled.”

Written and produced by Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo of The Neptunes, ‘Get Along With You’ was the second single from the singer’s 1999 debut album ‘Kaleidoscope.’

After the #Beyhive got wind of the her comments, they went wild on Kel’s respective social media handles – calling her out for alleging someone could steal a song that was never credited to her as a writer.

Tired of the hoopla, Kelis took to Instagram Thursday evening (July 28) to double down on her stance about Bey and The Neptunes.

“To add to my [original] thought, here’s the issue; this is not about Beyonce or anything else for that matter,” she started in the Instagram video seen above. “The reality is this is more about the fact there is a lot of hypocrisy and there’s a lot of nonsense. We’ve got Pharrell who did an interview last year talking about ‘artists’ rights’ and how people should be able to ‘rework their deals’ and ‘artists should be getting credit for what they’ve done’ and all that stuff when in reality when I was signed to him I had the same manager that he had and he has writing credits on MY RECORDS – all my singles coincidentally. He ain’t ever wrote a song or lyric a day in his life.

Her disparaging comments about Pharrell didn’t mean Bey was in her good graces, however.

“We’ve got Beyonce who, like I said, out of human decency and artistry and a female and all the empowerment stuff she sings about…I don’t talk about it, I am about it. All this female empowerment stuff, it only counts if you actually do it,” the GRAMMY nominee scolded.  Later, she added, “no, it’s not a collaboration. It’s called thievery because the definition of collaboration means we are working together. There’s no working together – you’re not even checking to see if everything’s cool. That’s a problem. I would never do that to another artist.”

Needless to say, the commentary only further fueled online attack – slams that likely show no sign of cooling any time soon.

As of time reported, however, Beyonce nor Pharrell have responded to Kelis’ claims of thievery.

  1. Hey July 28, 2022

You can try to attack her all day long. She’s standing firm as she should be. She’s clearly not afraid of anyone. Y’all thought this was Keri Hilson again but you got the right one this time 😂

    • eric July 28, 2022

More power to Kelis. She is in the right 100%.

Who was the song wrote by Kelis?? Beyoncé gave you credit we’re credit didn’t needed be credited.

  4. Paulo July 28, 2022

Love Kelis but how is it Bey’s fault when Pharrell stole her credits?

  5. Paulo July 28, 2022

Kelis is so hot I want to eat her cooter from the back

  6. Bossy Babe July 28, 2022

Kelis’ anger is misplaced! I’ll give her a pass since she’s grieving. I understand her frustration with the industry but she shouldn’t be calling Beyonce out when she credited her! Kelis isn’t even credited on the original track….
Her beef is with Chad & Pharrell.

    • Hmm July 29, 2022

Her point is that Beyonce knows the song is hers and that Pharrell stole her credits. If Bey was really about female artist empowerment, she’d demand that Kelis be credited and compensated.

  7. DRAGGING4BEY July 28, 2022

Angry flop hasbeen upset bc Bey outsold her entire discography with just one album && guess what she’s going do it again at midnight lmao. F*** this broad and her flop ass farm and BBQ sauces.

Only thing flopping are Bey’s big, fake teets!

      This is the comment 💯💯💯

      • Lorentz July 28, 2022

Lol actually it’s not the comment because just like Kelis, it’s loud and wrong. She gave her credit on the album. Now if she wants to be mad at someone that would be Chad and Pharrell. Legally it was done the correct way

  9. Liam July 28, 2022

I think Kelis has a point…she was never given a heads up or anything and only found out like everyone else which is wrong. If you gonna sample her whether she has a credit or they could have let her hear the song or give her team a heads up! I understand where she’s coming from and it seems more aimed at Pharrell than Bey. But I get where she’s coming from I regards to Bey tho

  10. Scoopz July 28, 2022

I like them both but i feel Kelis is being unfair here. Kelis wasnt credited on the original track. Beyonce made sure Kelis was credited in using the sample. Furthermore Kelis doesnt own the publishing rights to the track. Her publisher owns those rights so Beyonce met her obligation by getting the OK for the sample via the publisher i.e the owner. Thats whats supposed to happen. However on top of that Beyonces gone above and beyond by crediting Kelis (which i repeat didnt happen on Kelis original release) thereby opening her up to some revenue yet Kelis hasnt acknowledged that in her outrage. Kelis is just mad at the history behind the track i.e with Pharrels shady ways and has brought Beyonces name into it unnecessarily.

    • CamillaCabelloQUEEN July 28, 2022

Kelis feels abused and robbed. Sorry you hate black women who stand up for themselves.

      • Scoopz July 28, 2022

Girl get a grip. How she feels doesnt change the fact that in this situation Beyonce has done zero wrong. I want you to take a deep breath and process what im typing. Kelis does not own the rights. When you go to get the OK for a sample, you go to the rights owner. That is NOT Kelis. Beyonce went to the publisher and got the OK. All above board. Beyonce then went a step further and credited Kelis. THAT is her going above and beyond as Kelis was not credited in the release of the original song.

Kelis has every right to be angry at Pharrell and the Neptunes, but her critique of Beyonce in this instance is misplaced. Its not Beyonces place to know the ins and outs of the history of each track she hears and she should not be expected to. She liked a track, found out who the owner was and got the OK. That was her only legal obligation. Despite that she made sure Kelis got her flowers.

        1) An emotion based argument with no rooting in logic or legality gets you nowhere. It just means youre an angry unknown ranting about stuff you dont know anout.

        2) If youre going to wade into an argument learn objectivity.

        3) Im 100% with Kelis for speaking up against hypocrisy and immorality. The Neptunes did her dirty. But if shes going to critique in terms of female empowerment and solidarity then she cant drag Beyonces name through the mud with unrealistic expectations for her knowing Kelis’ personal history, whilst ignoring the gesture Beyonce did for her by giving her a credit when she didnt have to. THAT is hypocrisy.

        4) That will be all.

    • Miss salt gawl July 28, 2022

      THIS!!

    • Credits July 28, 2022

Beyoncé could have reached out to her. Point blank. That’s kelis’ biggest song. Whether she owns the rights to it or not, the public knows that to be a Kelis song, not a pharell song. If you aren’t an artist, you won’t know how it feels like to have someone borrow a piece of art you had a hand in creating, and not tell you about it before hand.

Furthermore, in regards to the part about the lack of female empowerment, maybe bey should have left it alone because of what pharell did to Kelis.

      • Scoopz July 28, 2022

Again youre ranting about stuff you dont know about. Kelis’ biggest songs were Milkshake followed by Caught Out there, not this comparatively unknown song Get Along With You. Furthermore it doesnt matter who sang the song, when attempting to gain authorisation for a sample the proper procedure is to go to the publisher. Thats the legal obligation and industry standard. Kelis knows this and is emotional because of her history with the Neptunes but whats your excuse? Stop jumping on the bandwagon and be objective. Beyonce gave Kelis when she didnt have to and Kelis is ignoring this and smearing Beyonces name and encouraging impressionable average joes like yourself to do the same when she knows Beyonce not only kept everything above board but in a showing of solidarity and empowerment gave Kelis a credit.

Learn objectivity and know your stuff.

      • Dreamlover July 28, 2022

Get Along With You isn’t close to being Kelis’ biggest song….

    • Abraham July 28, 2022

This is the most interesting and intellectual comment that l have read on this site. Thank you for that insightful reveal. The rest of you making senseless comments should be ashamed of yourselves.

      GROW UP OR DONT! Peace

    • Credits July 28, 2022

Correction : I assumed it was milkshake because kelis mentioned it in her video.

Regardless of the song. A heads up would have been courteous from one artist to another.

      Anywho, I’m Streaming now.

  11. Yo black mama July 28, 2022

This is stupid. Beyonce gave you the credit! Pharell definitely writes songs. This will give Kelis money and recognition. She has announced your credit before the album dropped. Maybe she didnt want to contact you because she’s secretive about her releases, pharell told her he and you have a bad relationship and he didnt contact u. Also, sue whoever didnt credit u initially. Lastly, it’s not stealing if they go through the legal , standard process

    • Roberta FlackSabbath July 28, 2022

      Legal isn’t always ETHICAL.

She feels robbed by an known song bandit and Satan worshipper!
Only kidding about the Satan stuff. SHE IS SATAN!!! kidding….

  12. akathexfactor July 28, 2022

Don’t bend like the others Kelis. Beyonce has stolen/sampled so much music over the years and got sued because of it, kanye too.

    • Scoopz July 28, 2022

Going forward im gonna need you to learn to read and process info before typing. Beyonce hasnt stole a thing. The Neptunes/Pharrell allegedly did the stealing. What Kelis is mad at Beyonce for is using the sample without checking she was ok with it.

Kelis doesnt own the track. she wasnt even credited as a writer on the original track. Beyonce liked the sample, found out who the owner was and asked for permission to use the track. Thats what she was supposed to do. She met her legal obligation.

Kelis is mad that she was young and naive and signed a contract without reading it properly that lead to her getting robbed by the Neptunes. Thats where her anger should be directed NOT at Beyonce who legally got the OK for the sample (for a track Kelis doesnt own and isnt credited for on the original) but then went above and beyond and made sure that at least with her usage of the track, Kelis was given a credit.

Reading what actually happens and not just reading other peoples comments and jumping on bandwagons will help you avoid looking the damn fool.

      Youre welcome

      • Hmm July 29, 2022

Kelis’ argument is that Beyonce isn’t blind to these factors. And using the sample put Bey in the position to walk the walk on her female empowerment stance and look out for a sista. It’s probably a conversation that Kelis should’ve had directly with Beyonce, but the premise of her argument is based on Beyonce’s self proclaimed support for females in a male dominated industry who’re often cheated and taken advantage of.

      • DaAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa July 29, 2022

Someone her really works for Beyonce.

Saying what is legal like if that’s the problem.
Kelis explained to you that it’s about ethics and morals.

Beyonce knows that kelis was robbed by Pharrell. She knows that she copied kelis before and that she looked up to her.

Yet a white artist did reached out to kelis for using a sample and Beyonce didn’t!

It’s not like you sample an old artist from the 80s that’s kelis! Shes from your music era!

And every kelis fan knows this song.
And we don’t know anything about kelis and Beyonces relationship so if kelis feels that its passive aggressive than she knows what she’s talking about!

        Don’t be a sheep!

  13. VirgosReignSupreme July 28, 2022

If people knew as much as they claim to know then they would know that Bounty and Full website is tan by Kelis’ sister and not her. It’s all a mess. She should’ve not said anything at all about it tbh.. we all know she wasn’t going to get a heads up because Pharrell own all the rights to that certain Kelis album

  14. Kyle July 28, 2022

Too many ppl, not just random but industry ppl, have been shading or speaking against beyonce lately. This would’ve never happened years ago. Think the veil is finally being lifted with beyonce lol

    • TAMAR July 28, 2022

B**** please. They been shading this woman since 1998

    • Keith July 28, 2022

@Kyle: As her husband said about a different topic in his interview with Kevin Hart, “if it seems to good to be true, it probably is”…

  15. Dc July 28, 2022

    Beyoncé is such a fake

  16. Keith July 28, 2022

This stupid BeyHive fanbase is at it again. They should be stopping to think about the fact that there seems to be some kind of plagiarism issue with every Beyonce release. I ain’t pointing no fingers, but it’s about time Bey fans started to realize that there may be something off about how she handles her business in THIS regard…but as someone said in an earlier comment they may have gotten the RIGHT one this time.

      That’s the real tea

  17. True Tea July 28, 2022

She’s upset because she knows Beyoncé will be who ppl think of when they hear Kelis sound.

Kelis was ALWAYS ahead of her time. She was an alternative/Indie R&B/POP artist 20yrs ago while Beyoncé was releasing Dance-POP and Contemporary R&B records.

Her various hair styles and Aesthetics is NOW seen as a PROGRESSIVE Art form, which Beyoncé will credit herself via “Renaissance”.

She came for Beyoncé because she see right thru her and her whole Female Empowerment movement as mentioned in the clip.

Kelis is tired of seeing her Art form appropriated by MAINSTREAM artists and profiting off it. Beyoncé is NOT the only one either. Several other MAINSTREAM artists have been accused of stealing Kelis style because of how innovative it was at the time.

    • No July 29, 2022

    • DaAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa July 29, 2022

Where is BET when it comes to her?

  18. Clarks0o00ñ July 28, 2022

Beyonce will still send kelis flowers and a written note, wanna bet?

I wanted a beyonce and kelis collaboration back in the day.

  21. JustIgnoreMe July 29, 2022

So from what I understand is The Neptunes/Pharrell did some shady dealing back in like 1999s. Those dealings resulting in Kelis not having the rights to music off her 1st 2 albums. Pharrell can give anyone rights to sample thise songs. In 2022 song is sampled on Beyonce album with permission for who legal has the songs rights. Kelis is upset because they did come ask her to use a song she hsdmt had rights to in 23 years?

    • DaAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa July 29, 2022
