Did You Miss It? Lizzo Responds To “White Music” Criticism, Talks Adele Friendship, & Performs “About Damn Time” on “Howard Stern”

Published: Friday 23rd Dec 2022 by Rashad

‘About Damn Time’ singer Lizzo should be enjoying downtime while her critically acclaimed ‘Special World Tour’ is on temporary hiatus, but instead she’s rocking the media promo trail in support of it and its parent album, ‘Special.’

Ahead of dropping jaws with her stunning performances on ‘SNL (December 17), the GRAMMY winner was spotted on ‘Late Night with Seth Meyers’ and ‘The Howard Stern Show.’

And while she used both platforms to dish about touring, her 2023 GRAMMY nods, and more, she was particularly vocal on ‘Stern’ about her humanitarian efforts, fielding criticisms for making “white-sounding” music, her friendship with Pop megastar Adele, and even treated the studio to two live performances.

Did you miss the action when it first hit the net? No worries; we’ve got you covered.

Lizzo on Adele friendship:

“I look up to her a lot. She’s done a lot, and she knows who she is, and she honors that with every album,” she shared. “And she gives us piano ballads that go number one, which is just like so hard and rare to do. You just have to be like the rarest gem of all time to be able to do that — we need her. I am grateful for her.”

Lizzo on criticism for allegedly making “White” music:

“[It is] very hurtful only because I am a Black woman. I feel like it challenges my identity and who I am. It diminishes that, which I think is really hurtful. And on the other end, I’m making funky, soulful, feel-good music that is so similar to a lot of Black music that was made for Black people in the ’70s and ’80s.”

The music itself does not feel “white” (they have not musical identity of their own anyway) but the way she presents the music to us feels off brand. Like something they would steal and repurpose back to us, like a jack harlow or something. She’s talented though.

Her music has ALWAYS felt like this tho. She never made James Brown/Chaka Khan type of FUNK music.

This is her style and it works for her. People need to accept the fact Black ppl are diverse and get the f*ck over it.
