RIAA: Migos Blast Past Beastie Boys & OutKast To Become Most-Certified Rap Group in History

Published: Saturday 24th Dec 2022 by Rashad

Even before the tragic death of Takeoff in November, chart-topping Rap group Migos had already called it quits as member Offset embarked on a solo career while Take joined forces with Quavo to form Unc & Phew.

And while the duo’s debut album, ‘Only Built for Infinity Links,’ has garnered a solid commercial response on charts to date, longtime fans – undeterred by the Migos split – seem to still be holding on to the trio’s biggest hits.

Evidence of that came via a slew of recently updated certifications at the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), a feat made possible thanks to impressive ongoing streams and digital sales of favorites from the group. Said figures were also given a boost due to supporters paying respects to Takeoff.

Look inside to see how the latest Gold and Platinum plaques attributed to the ‘Fight Night’ hitmakers see them knock Rap legends Beastie Boys and Outkast down a few notches in RIAA history books.

Migos already caught flack in the past for suggesting older artists should “kiss their feet” (as we reported here), but now their dedicated fans who agreed with the notion have new ammunition to support the argument thanks to the RIAA.

Delivered by the RIAA a month after the death of Takeoff, the collective updates bring Migos’ cumulative album and single sales to 39.5 million in the United States – placing them first among the country’s most-certified Rap groups.  As of time reported Migos has 44 certifications including Gold, Platinum, and Multi-Platinum plaques.

Before the Quality Control trio’s latest certification upgrades, their fellow Atlanta-based act OutKast reigned supreme as America’s most-certified Rap group thanks to 8 million singles and 25.5 million albums sold (achieved over 33 certifications).  Their stats include one Diamond album, multiple Platinum and multi-Platinum singles as well as Platinum and multi-Platinum albums.

Behind them are 80’s Hip-Hop hitmakers Beastie Boys with 26.5 million singles and albums sold to date (achieved over 24 certifications).  Their stats include one Diamond album, Platinum and Multi-Platinum albums, and two Gold singles.

How ? It takes 1500 streams to make 1 sale. How many times does 1 person have to listen to a 20 song album to make 1 sale? Versus somebody going to the store and buying 1 album & listening once counting as a sale.
