Anita Baker is renowned for delivering stunning performances. However, the legend’s showing at the NFC Championship Game today left some stunned… for all the wrong reasons.
The ‘Sweet Love’ belter had corners of social media salty with her rendition of the US National Anthem ahead of the San Francisco 49ers vs Philadelphia Eagles game.
Sung totally acapella, the format put the veteran’s pipes front and center; with the end result of her take on ‘The Star Spangled Banner’ drawing a markedly mixed response.

It appeared that Anita was having trouble with her in-ear monitors. A 65 year old senior citizen singing acapella in cold conditions inside of a huge stadium. Something like this was bound to happen. She could have lip synced like so many others but obviously chose not to. S*** happens.

She wasn’t terrible at all. I heard some off notes (I’m not a musical expert) but overall it was a cool rendition. I wish she put more of her signature Anita Baker spin on it but I guess she wanted to respect the original composition. Anita’s tone is golden and vocally she’s great. Always has been and always will be. Like others said she struggled to hear herself. As a singer you HAVE to hear yourself especially in a mega sized stadium such as this…

First of all I’m a US veteran, the national anthem deserves to be sang as it was written. No person in the thousands of times I’ve heard it sang who does a rendition does it justice. But, those who try to go over the top ruin it for everyone. Ms Baker is a wonderful singer and I hope is not judged by this awful performance.
