Chart Check [Billboard 200]: ‘Gloria’ is Sam Smith’s Fourth Consecutive Top 10 Hit

Published: Saturday 11th Feb 2023 by Rashad

Sam Smith scored yet another Billboard 200 top 10 hit this week thanks to their latest album, Gloria.’

Released January 27, the 13-track set –  which boasts the history-making ‘Unholy’ among its titles – came as a star-studded affair with names like Kim Petras, Ed Sheeran, Jimmy Napes, Jessie Reyez, Koffee, Ilya, Cirkut, StarGates, and Calvin Harris listed among its contributors.

And though it entered the Billboard 200 race with a bevy of critical acclaim and as a seeming shoo-in for top 10 placement on the Billboard 200, early reports indicated the project would end its inaugural sales week with the lowest first-week sales of Sam’s career to date.

Look inside to see if the prediction came true.

Sam Smith’s ‘Gloria’

First-Week Sales (SPS):  39,000 units

First-Week Sales (Pure): 14,000 units

Billboard 200 Debut:  #7

Thanks to total first-week sales of 39,000, ‘Gloria’ – with Smith’s lowest first-week sales to date for an LP – landed at #7 on the refreshed Billboard 200.  The debut also marks the GRAMMY winner’s lowest premiere placement yet for a studio album.

Its arrival follows the top 10 entries of their previous studio efforts 2014’s ‘In the Lonely Hour’ (#2 debut), 2017’s ‘The Thrill of It All’ (#1 debut), and 2020’s ‘Love Goes‘ (#5 debut) which opened to sales figures of 166,000 units, 237,000 units, and 41,000 units respectively.

Sometimes you live your life so much through another or other persons that you forget to live for yourself. This statement goes for fans and foes.

I didn’t even know he had an album out. Industry has to do better with promotion these days. Hardly any performances or interviews.
