Not even two months after Beyonce saw her latest Hot 100 #1 hit, ‘Break My Soul,’ help pen her in the record books of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) when it earned the diva her 40th Platinum plaque, Rihanna had already eclipsed the record thanks to fan favorites from her last album, 2016’s ‘Anti.’
Before Rih scored a critical touchdown as headliner of the Super Bowl LVII’s halftime show, the RIAA took to press to announce a slew of updated certifications tied to some of her biggest hits.
Pushing her cumulative digital single sales to 161.5 million in the United States (extending her reign as the undisputed Queen of Digital Music), the certification upgrades also upped her overall Gold, Platinum, and multi-Platinum plaque counts.
Thanks to ‘Anti’ cuts ‘Same Ol Mistakes’ and ‘Higher,’ the Bajan diva now owns 42 Platinum awards (for singles) from the RIAA – the most of any woman of color in history. Overall, Taylor Swift – with 49 Platinum-certified singles – is the only female act to own more than Rih.
Elsewhere, the certification upgrades also boosted the ‘Desperado‘ singer’s multi-Platinum plaque collection. At writing, she owns 34 multi-Platinum awards (for singles) from the RIAA – the most of any act in history. Drake, the previous owner of that title, has 32.
Keeping in mind these enhancements occurred before the Super Bowl, it’s likely – as indicated by recent Apple Music and iTunes activity – the impact of the game-day exposure will only extend her already untouched records with the RIAA.
And keep in mind she haven’t put out an album since 2016 so imagine the numbers if she put out an album by now 👑
