As far as legendary careers go, few can rival that of Diana Ross.
Beyond breaking down color and cultural barriers in the music industry during the height of her career in the 60’s and 70’s, the legendary diva has sold over 100 million records worldwide thanks to 25 studio albums and the countless hits from them.
Yet, even with six decades of reverence from fans, peers, and major tastemakers alike under her belt, Diana has never secured her industry’s top honor: a competitive GRAMMY. This despite having collected 13 nominations over the last 50+ years.
And while that seemed poised to change at the award show’s 2023 ceremony, fans of ‘The Boss’ Miss Ross clocked before the show even began that she would go home empty-handed once again.
As we reported here, Ross was listed in the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album category for her 2021 studio album, ‘Thank You.’
Challenged by the likes of Kelly Clarkson, Norah Jones, Pentatonix, and Michael Buble for the honor, the nod came as the 13th overall nomination of Diana’s career and first since 1982 hit ‘Muscles‘ was strong-armed out of the Best R&B Female Vocal Performance trophy in 1983. In 2023, however, she was defeated by Buble.
Diana technically won’t be leaving the ceremony completely empty-handed, however.
A previous Lifetime Achievement Award recipient (2012) for her solo work, this year Ross accepted the same honor on behalf of The Supremes original lineup (of which she is the only surviving member).

😆 🤣 😂 😆 🤣 😂
Fkkkked up.
Bible didn’t need yet another.
The album “Thank you” from Diana Ross is one of the most sincere offerings from a pop singer I’ve heard to date . It was not about being trendy but rather it was about respect ,longevity and gratitude something that every performer in this business should learn to embrace. This album should have been highly decorated. As the rest of her Stellar career. Ms Ross is music history and a cultral pioneer pop female music would be different without Diana Ross’s fantastic contributions. Most people don’t even get one lifetime Grammy achievement and this living Legend carries two lifetime worth of achievement.
Travesty. Rossapocalypse begins now. There are no more chances. This was it.
Is this revenge for not showing yesterday? Was Smokey a nail in the coffin? Did Berry not try hard enough? These questions plague us. Please make trhat next studio album with The Weeknd and Kimbra, Diana.
The Grammy award hierarchy is showing their bias and jealousy of one of the greatest female singers of all times. And by far Diana Ross is the greatest entertainer to ever perform. May I say how do you get two lifetime achievement awards and not get a so call competitive grammy award. The Grammy Awards are a joke and the joke is on the grammy Awards itself. Diana Ross the world appreciates you and your fans love and appreciate you. P*** on the Grammy Awards who need it. Talent is Talent and Diana Ross has it and no one can take that away from her.
g
Diana Ross is still Thee BLUEPRINT with or without a Grammy.
DIANA ROSS SHOULD HAVE WON! THIS MAKES NO SENSE WHAT’S SO EVER
I agree, this make no sense. Diana Ross is one of the most prolific singers of all times. Her music never gets old. It is always enjoyable and soothing. The grammy awards as usual shows that it is ran by idiots. How can you justify the greatest entertainer of all times not have a competitive Grammy? Its either two things? one jealousy or idiocracy
The Recording Arts and Sciences need to be ashamed of themselves for denying Diana Ross another Grammy. She had been nominated numerous times, and they still refuse to reward her. I can’t believe she was denied again this year.
Diana Ross doesn’t need a so-called Grammy award she is talented as it is. and her career has lasted We need to get over this shallow rubbish . That you are only a somebody because you have won A Grammy or a Oscar or have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame or appeared on the cover of Time magazine. Anybody with a bit of common sense knows that the Grammys are just self congratulation rubbish run by the usual self important people.
This!
Some of these artists who have all these awards either have no cultural impact and longevity OR ppl really don’t care for them.
The FACT award shows have consistently had LOW RATINGS speak volume.
When Diana was in her prime, this wasn’t case.
wasn’t *the* case.
This shouid have been hers. Sure the nomination is an honor but really?! Congrats to being the only female singer to get the group & solo Lifetime Achievement Award!
If one person has over 30 Grammys it shows it doesn’t mean much. Diana created what we call pop diva all by herself. She is the original. Before her girls in Rock and Roll didn’t dress like glamorous movie stars from the 1930s…Now all the pop divas copy her whether they know it or not. She has a Tony, and was in the Guiness Book of World Records as the most successful female artist in history before Madonna took the prize. She has a Kennedy Center Award and the Presidential Medal of Freedom and that’s just a few of the truly prestigious awards she has. .All of these awards make the Grammys look like small potatoes.
I agree the Grammy awards show that they are low class and has no sense of worth. Beyoncé is a talented singer but she is by all means no Diana Ross. I can barely name three of her songs and she is not on my play list as is Aretha, Diana Ross, Whitney and Barbra Streisand and Donna Summer. So who does the grammy think they are fooling? Give Diana Ross the Grammy and show that your award show is not completely stupid.
This has always baffled me but it’s a love hate relationship with the voting members and Ms. Ross. But, just a side note. Cindy Birdsong is still alive.
So are Jean Terrell, Lynda Lawrence, Scherrie Payne and Susaye Greene. But Diana Ross is the only surviving original member. Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson are no longer with us.
Just goes to show you the awards mean NOTHING, over 60 years in the business and still the BLUEPRINT.
An astute article. I believe that Ross’ clear soprano, sensitive phrasing and engaging voice has broadened the platform for so many artists across so many genres for decades. Musicians who played with Billie Holiday once gave Ross a standing ovation being so captivated by her performance in the studio.
I believe the two Lifetime Grammy awards as a solo and group artist are more significant than a competitive one. Competitions are generally bound by the fickle fashion, trends, popularity and politics.
Long live real talent!
