Whitney Houston’s ‘If I Told You That’ With George Michael Was Originally Intended to be a Michael Jackson Duet

As with many iconic songs, there’s quite the story behind Whitney Houston and George Michael‘s 2000 jam ‘If I Told You That.’

During an appearance on the We Sound Crazy Podcast, hitmaker Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins shared an interesting fact about the track – and it relates to Michael Jackson.

Full story below…

Reflecting on the creation of the song (which was originally housed on Houston’s 1998 album ‘My Love Is Your Love’), Jerkins shared that the duet version that arrived two years later was originally conceived and demoed as a duet between the songbird and the King of Pop.

The prolific producer was notably working on both Houston and MJ’s projects at the time.

Check out what he said:

Oh, what could have been! Still, we’re all sorts of enamored with the Nippy and George incarnation of the cut.

George is cute and all, and I do love his duet with my girl Mary Thee Blige, but this song would’ve been better with Michael.

I always thought it was part of an effort to reach other cultures, like her song with Enrique at the same time. I don’t think the song missed a whole lot without Michael.

She was already doing that without them.

Not with r&b. She was considered more pop until My Love Is Your Love. That’s her first r&b based album and multiple songs like “Oh Yes”, “I Was Made to Love Him” and “My Love Is Your Love” incorporated Spanish music elements.

Whitney grew up in the church she was a blessed heart, singing about GOD, Clive discovered her and brought her the world.

She sold over 250 million records not including her soundtrack sales. . Like bodyguard which sold over 45 million, since she was killed.
