‘Snooze‘ may lie beside ‘Kill Bill‘ in SZA‘s personal Billboard history log as her longest-charting Hot 100 singles to date, but this week the former ‘SOS‘ hit shook up the Music Bible’s overall record books when it ascended into the top 10.
The rise into the top 10 marked the eighth time SZA’s visited the coveted chart region over her illustrious career, but even more noteworthy is the fact it’s the fifth time she did so from the ‘SOS’ album alone. As such, the set becomes the first female R&B album this century to boast as many top 10 hits.
Already in unique company having catapulted four top 10s from the LP, the add of ‘Snooze’ pushes the songstress (born Solana Rowe) into even more exclusive territory.
In fact, the only other Black female acts to have ever lifted 5 top 10 hits from one studio effort are legendary divas Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson.
For Jackson, the boast of watching a project birth 5 top 10 hits happened three different times – a record yet to be matched or surpassed.
Her third LP, 1986’s ‘Control,’ became the first album by a female act to boast 5 top 10 hits when it paraded ‘What Have You Done for Me Lately,’ ‘Nasty,’ ‘Control (its title track),’ ‘Let’s Wait Awhile,’ and ‘When I Think of You’ (her inaugural #1 hit) to various positions in the chart region across 1986-87.
She followed in 1989 when ‘Rhythm Nation 1814‘ marched a whopping 7 top 10 hits (‘Miss You Much,’ ‘Alright,’ ‘Love Will Never Do,’ ‘Escapade,’ ‘Alright,’ ‘Black Cat,’ and ‘Come Back to Me’) to the Hot 100’s top 10 across 1989-90.
Her 1993 eponymous effort, ‘Janet,’ boasted 6 top 10 hits as well including ‘If,’ ‘Again,’ ‘Because of Love,’ ‘Anytime, Any Place, ‘You Want This,’ and ‘That’s the Way Love Goes.’
For Houston, it was 1987’s ‘Whitney’ that launched 5 top 10 hits including the #9-peaking ‘Love Will Save the Day’ as well as four #1s – ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody,”Didn’t We Almost Have It All,’ ‘Where Do Broken Hearts Go,’ and ‘So Emotional.’
The ascension of SZA’s ‘Snooze’ comes as one of many instances the GRAMMY winner has challenged one of Houston’s historic chart stats with just the ‘SOS’ era hits alone.
As previously reported, Rowe’s ‘Kill Bill’ tied Whitney’s record for longest-running #2 single and their respective sophomore albums are two of the only three LPs by Black women to rule the Billboard 200 for over 10 weeks. They’re joined by Mariah Carey.
It should be noted Rihanna is a technical inclusion on this list as the era attached to her third studio album, 2007’s ‘Good Girl Gone Bad,’ spawned three top 10 hits (‘Umbrella,’ ‘Hate That I Love You,’ and ‘Don’t Stop the Music’) and later tacked on two more – ‘Take a Bow,’ and ‘Disturbia’ – with its re-release: ‘Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded.’
